I actually prefer to enter the cc when I do online check in, so I don't have to have the card swiped when I arrive. The only reason I use a cc is to have express check out.
But our first few stays on property back in the early 80's I paid cash for the room and was not required to use a credit card (I didn't have one anyway). We just didn't have room charge capabilities and paid food and souvenirs OOP with cash. I still use cash for food, but I use room charges for souvenirs (unless they're something really cheap, then I use cash).
Maybe they are going to require cc for online check in so that people who want to settle in cash will have to go to the desk in person. Since they don't swipe a cc when you pick up your online check in packet, maybe they don't want them dealing with cash at that desk either.
