Do you have to BUY the cap and gown for graduation?

I graduated HS in 90. We were forced to rent them for some rediculous amount close to $50. The girls had white and boys had black...

The girls gowns were so GROSS....Some had stains, some had iron burns in them, some were ripped, and they didn't give replacements either, they were stuck with them....

When I graduated college in '94 at PSU we bought ours and I think I paid around $40-50 for cap and gown...

I was so po'd when I so how much better quality I got for the same amount...

When I graduated HS in 1986, we borrowed our gowns from the school. They were the same ones that the school choir wore. So, imagine 225 students, in wool gowns, in the middle of June, in a stuffy gymnasium(no AC). It wasn't pretty. As far as the caps, once again borrowed from the school. I guess they just stored them from year to year. Gosh, I hope they were drycleaned. Ewww. I should have thought about that 20 years ago, I guess. And finally, for the tassels, we were allowed to keep them. The school paid for them. Geez they better. After making me stand around in a hot gym in a stinky used cap and gown for two hours.

My high school provided them, and we had to hand them back in to get our deploma. My college we have to buy them, and I think they are around $50.

My high school and college both make you pay for them. For high school I want to say it was around $40, college ones are around $60. Ridiculous for something you will only wear for 2 1/2 hours

Our gowns were wicked thick polyester. We had class day in 98 degree heat with 100% humidity in our school gym. 460 grads on the floor, roughly 500 juniors in the bleachers, probably 100 other students, and 2-300 parents also in the bleachers. No AC in the school either. I walked out of that gym feeling like I'd been swimming. This is an annual thing at the school (and it always seems to fall on the hottest day of the year). Graduation though, is in an air conditioned arena (or it has been the last 4 years, before it was either outside or in a sweatbox arena), but it was only 50 degrees when we graduated. There are definitely benefits to buying a gown versus renting. I know we all used half a bottle of Febreze on each of our gowns to try to get rid of the stink. It's really gross.
