Do you have to buy new box springs when you get a new mattress?

I know that beds are usually sold in sets, but wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a new mattress? What's the point of getting new box springs too? We defintely need new mattress, but how do you know whether you need new box springs?

Looking on-line, I'm not finding an impartial answer. Every answer seems to come from the industry, so of course, they want you to buy new box springs.

If you care about the warranty, you have to use the box spring that goes with the mattress from what I understand

Many mattresses are not sold with box springs any more, they are a platform instead. If you already have a platform, you don't need to buy the foundation piece. This is what we did and it did not negate our warranty but you should check with the seller on this. If you still have actual box springs then I would buy both the foundation piece and the mattress.

I always get a new box spring when i get a new mattress-typically every 6 years. I dont think that you have to but i always do.

One of our beds is a platform bed. We only bought the mattress for that bed. The bed I actually sleep in is a plain frame with an antique maple headboard blocked against the wall but not actually attached to the bed frame, and when it's time, I won't replace that box spring either. (We flip and turn our mattresses every month, so honestly, we've never replaced one yet. We slept on a double for 10 years, then handed it down to my niece. My nephew is still sleeping on it. Our current queen sized mattress is about 12 years old and still in good shape, although during recent flippings, DH and I have noted that we will probably have to replace it in another few years.)

Wow, every 6 years. Our first mattress lasted 20 years. Our current one is 10 years old, but it has a 30 year warranty. My mom just replaced her 51 year old mattress....but it really should have been replaced about 20 years ago.

No, they are sold as sets, but you can buy separately. A box spring is different from a platform foundation. I sold mattresses many moons ago and all of them had box springs. You could still buy the mattress without the box spring and use it on a platform bed. Putting a new mattress on an old box spring was not recommended because the mattress would not have adequate support. Now, most sets are sold with platform foundations instead of box springs. A platform foundation is just that, a platform so if you already have one and it is in good shape, all you need is the mattress.

My daughter just bought "just the mattress" the other day. She was moving and the heavens opened up and rained on her mattress, ruining it. Her box spring and frame were back at the house, safe. She bought just the top and then knocked $100 since she didn't need the box spring or a frame.
