I don't have recipes for family favorites that I was taught to cook by my mother. She has been gone since 1984. I was thinking about this when I posted meals that your family goes yes to. I know how to cook them, just don't have them written down.
My Mom was of the mind, god knows from where that you couldn't cook, unless you knew how to cook at least 10 meals, a cake and corn bread from memory, you didn't know how to cook. Of course she didn't tell us that she just taught us that way.
I have a ton of cookbooks and honestly even when I use a recipe, I look at it and season to my family's tastes. For instance I have a recipe for chicken korma. My child doesn't like hot pepper, my husband does. I know I can add pepper to DH's dish so I don't put it in even though the recipe calls for it. I also add more nuts then the recipe calls for.
What do others do? Am I the only person who cooks this way?
