I have one... he's my brother lol, so if i ever need anything Ive got it covered.

I never saw the need for one though other than basic questions like wills, etc. but Im reading a lot about real estate transactions and needing a lawyer for them. We didnt have one when we bought this house. I called my brother and he ran down a few basic rules that he dealt with when he bought his house but there wasnt any legal advice involved.

This may be too personal of a question so if you dont want to answer by all means dont... I was just curious if Im missing a reason to have one on retainer.

Yes we do -- we use the same lawyer who wrote my in-laws' will and handled FIL's trust when he passed away. :)

Edited to add: I just read the end of your post -- no, we don't have a lawyer "on retainer". There's simply no need for that.

We have a lawyer that we used for our wills, power of attorney etc but he's not on retainer. If the need arose we also have a few friends who are lawyers.

Nope. We have Hyatt Legal Services as an optional benefit here at work. So, if we have a legal problem, we can call there. We plan to call them soon to do estate planning and a will.

Yep...I work for him. Actually, if anything ever goes wrong, I just draft it up myself and have him sign it. :)

my parents do and dh and i used him to do our will the last time we visited them.

he's the best. one time he billed my mom for "two homemade apple pies." LOL

yup, our family lawyers are my father and myself.
Actually, that isn't true....we really use one of my father's friends or my friends because usually the problem is beyond our area of practice. But my dad and I are great notaries! :p

We do, in fact, have a family lawyer. It started while my parents living will was being made, and stuff kept happening. He's a great financial lawyer, I guess you'd call it. He's mainly handy in dealing with my dad's estate, and mine and my brother's businesses. We're both very talented technically, but bumbling idiots with paperwork!

My brother is our "family's attorney". He practices Finance and Corporate law, but if it's something that he isn't familiar with, he asks one of associates.

We paid our land lawyer $5,000 last year and he still has a lot of work ahead of him. I can't wait until my DS is a Lawyer......just another 9 years! He's always wanted to be a lawyer and that's what he's going for. We haven't even done our wills yet:rolleyes:

We have a friend who is a lawyer and if needed , he is there. Now....doctors......I have 4 in my family alone!!

My boyfriend's mom is a lawyer. She wrote all of my power of attorney stuff before I did the college program. I wasn't planning on doing any of that stuff, but she insisted on doing them because she didn't want me going without them!

She's not really our family lawyer, because she does mostly oil and gas law, but she's the first person I or my parents ask if we have a legal question.

We use my dad's lawyer as the family lawyer. We don't pay him any fees unless we use his services.

well, since my mother, my sister and I are all attorneys...I guess you could say we keep it in the family.

Yes , and she bills us by the hour . We have not needed her much but when we did it was nice to not worry .

No, we do not. But, my DH is in a fishing club and one of the members is a very close friend and we have asked him for advice a few times as well as had him represent us on a case once.
