Do you ever turn your vacuum on and it smells really bad?

For the last year or so, my bagless vacuum (Fantom) has been smelling sooooo bad when I turn it on. I would rinse out the canister afterwards, but still each time I would turn it on, it smelled like my dog. (big dog, lots of hair). Well I couldn't take it anymore and bought a new vac. (with bags)

Now I have a great vacuum, works great, but I just turned it on and I could faintly smell dog again!

OMG! Tell me this is just my imagination! This is only ten days old now!! (i use it 3x a week and the bag is no where near full.)

I think it's unavoidable when you have a dog. I do and my vacuum always stinks. There's some fragrance packets you can buy to dump into the bag and it helps a bit.

Mine does that too - except mine is sometimes a cigarette smell. I acquired my bag one when my grandmother passed away because my mom already had one. Well grandma smoked and so did mostly anyone that entered her house. Anyway - every once in a while I get that smell and it's been almost 14 years.

I know nothing about bagless vacuums, but with mine, when it starts to smell, I cut up dryer sheets (like Downy) then suck them up in the vauum. It really helps.

Magickndm That's a great idea! I've used the fragrance pellets but I never though of using drier sheets. I'm going to try this, thanks!

thanks for the suggestions. I'm glad I'm not going crazy. Once I start vacuuming, the smell goes away. (unlike with the old bagless vac). Pets - gotta love them, but then sometimes.... :)

We bought a new vacuum, a Hoover Wind Tunnel with bags, in January or February (with our income tax refund). I just noticed the doggy smell emitting from it. Mind you the bag was full and I haven't turned it on since I changed it this morning. I'll have to let you know if the smell is still there when I clean the carpet tonight or tomorrow morning.

you can also vacuum up some baking soda and let it stay in your vacuum...kills odor like there's no tomorrow for pennies on the dollar!

Same thing happened to us (after we got our dog). The guy at the vacuum cleaner store told us that it's just what happens when you have a dog and the fur sits in the bag, even for a short period of time. My husband thinks I change the bag too frequently, but it does fill up quite fast (our dog sheds alot and our vacuum is REALLY efficient at picking stuff up). Changing it every time I vacuum has worked to keep it smell free.

I was thinking of buying a new Vac, but now that I know it still can invade the new vacumn, I will just keep this one.

Ew yes! Dog smell here too! I figured it was in the brushes since the bag is always tossed. Mine sucks up all kinds of carpet freshener including the supposed anti-pet-odor ones, with no help.
