May be a silly question I dont know.
With all the talk about the fine China and how we havent used it, it got me to thinking maybe we should celebrate Chinese New Year on Sunday with an authentic Chinese meal.

It would certainly be a learning experience for the kids. I love Chinese food too so that would be a bonus ;)

I have a friend ( yeah one *those* people) who picks a different country every year at Christmas and teaches her children the customs and heritage and they have a Swedish (or whatever country is it that year) Christmas.

SO have you ever celebrated another cultures holiday?

There are all the non-Irish folks who celebrate St. Patrick's Day. That's probably the most common instance.

When we had our exchange students we celebrated holidays from Japan, Finland, Uruguay and Eucador. As a French teacher I celebrate Bastill Day along with them, and does Mardi Gras count?

I have enough trouble getting myself together to celebrate my own holidays, let alone someone else's.

Good question, Binny,
My 8 year old DD (in private school, refer to your other thread!) is celebrating Chinese New Year in school today, to continue the celebration, we are ordering Chinese for dinner (yeah, no cooking!). For St. Patrick's day, I always make corned beef and cabbage. And, since my husband's background is NY Jewish and mine is Southern Baptish, I make Latkes for Hannukkah and Christmas cookies and cakes during Christmas. I would make other cultures' dishes if I had good recipes (ie beans and rice for Kwanzaa). I think one of the best ways to introduce tolerance and cultural diversity to our children is through food and a culture's holiday traditions and meals is a wonderful, delicious way to learn.

Here in Leicester, UK we have a very large and diverse asian population and one of the celebrations that the whole city enjoys (whatever their ethnic background), is Diwali - the Hindu festival of Truth and Light. It's usually in late October/November and decorative lights are put up in the streets and houses and there is usually a big fireworks display too :)
