Just saw this on the news. Some of the dog food and snacks were almost 2 yrs pass the expiration date and still on the shelves at several Petco around here.
I never even thought to check this but will from now on.
A couples two dogs got real sick from eating old dog food that had expired.
Do you check the expiration date?

I hadn't, but I will now.

Yuck! I will let my parents know about this.

Thanks for the heads up! :wave2:

Never thought to check before as the cats eat it so quickly. Also never thought a store would keep it on the shelf past the experation date. I'll guess I need to start checking.

Never crossed my mind. Didn't know they had an expiration date.
Thanks for the info:D

 I have to admit it. I didn't even know there was an expiration date on the cat food. DUH.

Deanna:rolleyes:

Absolutely! I learned to do this a few years ago when my dog refused to eat anything from a brand new bag of kibble. Turned out it was stale. I was able to return it, but rather than make two trips for the dog food, I now make only one ;) .

Don't feel bad I don't know either, never even thought about it and yet our dogs are like family!

I typically don't worry about it when I buy it because I've seen how fast the stuff I buy goes off the shelves, but if I open a can and it smells/looks/feels wrong, or the cats won't eat it, I toss it and check the expiration on the rest of them.

My DH doesn't even check the expiration dates on people food. (We were on vacation for 9 days and he tried to serve the kids the milk that had been in the fridge while we were gone...he ran it through the strainer to get the curdled chunks out..obviously the kids took one drink and revolted.) (Doesn't that make you want to come to dinner at MY house???)

Seeing that my Dane eats everything and goes through a 50lb bag pretty fast, no I don't check. If eating shoes, drywall, stuffed animals, wood, etc... doesn't hurt her, I don't think stale dog chow will :)

I never even thought about that. Now I feel bad. I hope I haven't ever fed my dog bad food.

I have read that you should buy dog food in small enough bags that you use it within 6 weeks. After that, the quality deteriorates too badly, even if you have it stored in a sealed container.

Yes, I do check expi dates and also buy smallers bags i nthe summer when it's more humid. This is bagged dry little chunks, I'm talking about.

herc.
