My friend's mother is adamit (spelling?) that she have travellers insurance before she goes to Disney. My family isn't really worried, my grandparents go out of country more than 3 times a year and said they only started buying once they hit over the age of 50 but not when they were young. I'm 23, should I be worried about this too? Just curious what everyone else does! Thanks in advance!

We never leave the country without travel insurance, for only a few dollars we receive yearly coverage and with the recent Transmeridian bankrupcy, we will see a refund even faster.

We are the opposite. We have never purchased insurance.

We purchase it all the time. We don't leave the country without it. I look at it this way...for a few extra dollars, I know that if I'm in an accident or get sick on my vacation, I'm not going to face a HUGE hospital bill or saddle my family with a huge hospital bill. Even a simple trip to a walk-in clinic in the States can be a couple of hundred dollars.

hmmm...just reread the original post....are we talking health insurance or cancellation insurance? (I'm talking about health.) LOL

Even if we weren't traveling with kids we'd get it. Hate to have my whole vaction spoiled by some Doctor or Dentist visit for something minor that could eat up a hugh chunk of our spending money. With kids it's absolutely neccessary. My nephew is fearless (once caught him launching off the top of couch to catch a ride on the ceiling fan) and my niece is alot like me when I was young ... really clumsy. No doubt those kids are getting the best medical care if something (cross your fingers knock on wood) happens. Trip cancelation insurance is only smart too. If something happens and you can't go then at least you're not out the whole cost of the trip.

My youngest has life threatening allergies and I have asthma so YES we always get it..... rather be safe then sorry for those few extra $$!

As far as Health Insurance is concerned, you might want to check your insurance at work. For me, I am covered for certain things outside of Canada. Therefore we don't buy travel insurance. Also, your credit card company often offers travel insurance at fairly good rates and generally you can sign up over the phone. HTH.

We don't buy any insurance, health or cancellation, although I do stress about it I just can't part with the $$. I know, stupid but there it is.

I was talking about cancellation insurance and as far as health insurance both my Dh and I have coverage outside of Canada.

It never hurts to have insurance...especially medical. Even though you may have medical insurance through work, etc. who's to say the policy won't change while your on vacation. Just a thought...I don't know if this actually happens or not. :confused3
I got both medical and travel insurance with CAA at what I thought was a good price. Peace of mind is important to me, so I got it. :goodvibes
Also, if you or one of your family members have a health problem, you might one to consider both insurances. Remember to read the fine print. Some policies only cover your medical condition if you have been in reasonably good health a few months before your trip.
Always those pesky details.

It depends on what you have booked for your vacation. With many airlines now, you don't lose the money for your flights if you need to cancel. Many of them will now give you a credit for a future flight. If you have booked a hotel separately, most reservations can be cancelled without penalty up to 1 day before arrival. I'm not sure how it would work if you have booked a package vacation - best to read the fine print.

I always but travel medical insurance even though I have coverage through my work policy. I have found though that the purchased one through CAA has better coverage then my work one and for the 18 for 2 weeks (I'm 28) it is well worth the peace of mind. My Dad had a heart attack on vacation about 8 years ago when we were in Indy and luckly our family purchsed insurance becuase the medical bill came to over $45,000.00 US and the work covergae would not have covered eveything. The purchased insurance even paid for me to fly home (had to get back to university) as the rest of my family stayed and waited till my dad could drive back about three weeks later which was paid for by the insurance. So from now on I always but it.

We always have it now especially whe taking kids because you just never know what may happen. We got year long coverage through TD Meloche Monnex.

It doesn't matter how young or healthly you are. Accidents happen to everybody.

In July, we went to New Jersey for one week. Let me stress it was the ONLY TIME WE HAVE GONE WITHOUT INSURANCE. By some freakish way, I managed to dislocate my jaw. Our bill was $2000 . I guess I learned the hard way

We never leave this province without extended medical ins. One year when we were in WDW I came down with an eye infection, that without insurance from CAA would have cost me $150.00 CND just for a little infection!

I would hate to see the costs involved if you were in a car accident etc where you had to be hospitalized! :earseek:

Cancellation Insurance, no we don't bother. Medical, always. I would never leave the country without it, you never know what can happen.

We absolutely buy insurance. I wouldn't leave without it! :)

I ALWAYS buy cancellation & medical insurance.

A couple of years ago, we decided to drive down to Florida. By the time we got to San Augustine, my daughter and I were quite sick.

We were told we were suffering from food poisoning.

We went to the San Augustine hospital and for the examination, blood test and IV drip (we were both drastically dehydrated) it was well over $3000US :scared1:

We lost a day of vacation (which if we hadn't gone to hospital, may well have ended up being even longer). It would have ruined our vacation if we would have had to pay this bill ourselves.::yes::

A friend of mine went to Buffalo for a weekend and while there her son got stung by a wasp. The emerg room bill was $1000.:faint:

Like the saying goes.............Don't leave home without it........ ::yes::

iluvwesties (aka Carol) :flower3:

Where do you buy the insurance from? How much does one adult run? (and i'm considering medical insurance. Cancellation I'm not too worried about.)

Try CAA or Blue Cross. Also some employers include it and some premium credit cards do as well.

Also Royal Bank and even Thomas Cook have insurance. I mention these two because my dad can't get insurance from CAA (age and medical history) but he can from Thomas Cook and apparently, RBC.
