If my sister invited us to things like that, I would go. But if I didn't feel like it or couldn't for whatever reason, I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty.
I expect my entire family to come see DD as a sheep in our Church Christmas pagent . Honestly, I don't expect anyone to come see DD and I don't go see my brother's kids. We all live in different states which helps in situations like this. The only one I even tell about these things is my mom. If she's planning a visit she might adjust her dates but that's about it.
If I had neices and nephews that lived close I would go. It always ment a lot to me when my extended family showed up at my things. Maybe not all of them but when I had the lead in the school play, I think I would have been sad had only my parents came.
As a parent it means a lot to me when people come to my DS's things. I don't think we'd harass people into coming but it is special when they do.
If I had nieces and nephews I would make the effort to go to any of their things. I can't see why someone wouldn't. But if you are trying to say a marching band competition is more entertaining then the Nutcracker, gee it would be a tossup for me which one was the most tedious to sit through. Regardless I would make the effort to make it to such a close relatives special event.
I guess that was more of a comment on the QUALITY of the performance. If the production was good I wouldn't mind so much but oh boy, it was interesting. The costumes were nice and there were 3 dancers in the entire show that were really good, the rest, well, I thought ballet dancers were supposed to be graceful???
Our old town had a fantastic dance studio and going to their performances were really a treat even thought I didn't have any kids/relatives in the show. It was a quality performance. The show last night for my nieces was not and I guess that is why I really didn't want to go. We have watched the video tapes of all the past productions and knew what we were in for -canned music, bad dancing and an entire evening of listening to my sister tell us how wonderful her DD7 is while totally ignoring the fact that her DD10 is ALSO in the show????
I told DD that we would go to a professional performance next year.
