Do the theaters play new movies?

Specifically, those in my group want to know -- what are the odds of the new Spiderman movie being on our July 10th Wonder cruise? Thanks!

Biggest difference movie-wise with DCL is they DO play currently running and first-run Disney (or Disney-verse) movies in the theater.

Op I'd say the odds are slim as while Marvel studios had a hand and it's part of the MCU I believe overall distribution is being done by Sony though cruisers on board Thursday or later will be able to confirm if it IS indeed playing

They do for Disney/Pixar/Star Wars/Marvel movies. It's not clear if Spider-Man will be shown since it's a Sony/Columbia production. Marvel sold the rights to Spidey to Sony before being bought by Disney.

Disney has distribution rights for the new Spiderman movie in only Russia and Finland.

Chances are it will not be on the ships in the theaters. After a while, it may show up on the in-room movie options, however.

I was on the Alaska cruise when the Guardians movie was available. If it's a Disney owned movie. It will be available. Expect the shows to be busy.

Guardians is a Disney produced movie. Spiderman isn't.

Spiderman is a confusing hybrid. I know the stores have a big display up with merch, but I don't know how that affects the movie. I've not been on a DCL ship when one is out, so I don't know if it's played on board or not.

Marvel sold / licensed out LOTS of their characters to survive before they produced Iron Man and long before they became part of the Disney Brand. Even the first Avengers movie was NOT a "Disney" production. They did buy out Paramount's distribution rights to that movie, and therefore it "became" Disney.

for MOVIES: the X-Men and Fantastic 4 worlds were parted out to 20th Century Fox and Spiderman went to Sony. There are some other licensing issues where Disney has character rights in theme parks in various parts of the world and other companies have those same rights elsewhere. (Like Spiderman is at the Universal Resort in Orlando, but Disney has him at the Disneyland resort and on DCL)

Then there was the Sony e-mail hack .... and that led to Marvel/Disney working with Sony on the next round of Spiderman movies. Marvel had a huge hand in the story and the creation of the movie and they will "officially part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe", but Sony is distributing it.

So the bottom line is - I really don't know if Spiderman Homecoming will be showing on the DCL ships in the WDT or Buena Vista Theater. Like @PrincessShmoo said - it will probably end up on your TV in the stateroom - in a few months.

Someone in our cruise group called today and Spiderman Homecoming WILL be showing on DCL!

FYI Spider-Man is completely owned by Sony. Per the agreement with Disney, the new film is being produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony. Disney retains all international merchandising rights.

That's brave of them.
They don't usually officially announce a new movie being shown onboard until the night before/cruise of, even if it's pretty obvious they're going to be.

Just as a thought - I wonder WHO said it'll be showing? If it's one of the CMs answering the phones, I'd be wary of the validity.

Even so, they usually don't usually say yes or no.
To be fair, they never even said they called DCL, could have been the local librarian lol :P

Oh, I know. I've been on cruises when movies have premiered, and no one onboard will admit that there's going to be a PremEar at Sea until, like, the day before the actual opening.

Very true.

Though I guess since the movie comes out 7/7 and the OP was asking about the 7/10 cruise, there would be no option of a PremEAR on there as it would already be out. Perhaps that's why the person on the DCL equivalent of MovieFone (assuming that's who they called) knew it would be on?

(Just pondering. I don't know (or really care as Wonder Woman proved that it's not that I'm not a super hero girl...it's that I'm not a Marvel girl) one way or the other. :) )

Haha! We are on the July 24 9-night Alaska and here's what was said....

Just got off the phone with DCL - here are the movies scheduled. Finding Dory, Moana, Rogue One, Beauty and the Beast, Born in China, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales, Cars 3 and Spiderman.

I'm currently on the Magic and we have been told that Spider-Man will be shown on Thursday, which I'm guessing is the release date. It's a midnight showing.

When Spider-Man appeared in Civil War.... that's when I would have said DCL is likely to have access to it.

Ok, I don't know the answer, but I am curious now and hope someone will post after the applicable dates.
