Just curious - do people book a "fake" stay before their "real" reservation just to open their 180+10 early? I can see where that might be helpful especially during free dining!

Yes. There's a whole thread about doing it on the FastPass board for FP. ADRs are no different, really.

When they cancel the fake reservation, wouldn't the ADRs, and FP cancel also?

Not if they wait to cancel the ressie within the 30 day window for everyone to book FP+ (or the 180 day window to book ADRs).

When you book, you get a warning that canceling the room reservation will not cancel any ADRs or FP+ reservations you have made.

I think they do this so people are free to cancel their original room reservation and switch to a different room later (I have done this before because I either changed my mind and wanted to stay in a different resort or I found a cheaper deal through Orbitz and booked through them- I have never booked a throwaway room, though. That seems like not playing by the rules to me).

You also have to be careful about something else. Doing this little "trick" is not as easy as it used to be for people who still want to stay on Disney property. Disney has started (probably because of this specific problem) not allowing people to simply call and shorten the length of their stay. People must now cancel the original reservation and rebook for the room for the new dates, possibly loosing a discount and/or not finding availability for the room they want.

I am sure people who intend to stay off property still do this. There will always be those who try to thwart the system.
