Do I need a copy of Death Certificate?

We're taking my nephew (12) on DCL cruise in November. I plan on having DBIL sign (notarize) saying that we can take him out of country and approve any necessary medical treatment. We'll also bring his birth certificate.

In reading another thread I wondered if I needed a copy of my DS death certificate? Since her name is on birth certificate, they would probably wonder why she didn't sign/notarize permission also. If so, do I need a raised seal/certified copy?

TIA!

I don't know if you need it, but if you can get one, then do it. It is better to have it and not need it. Than the other way around. I doubt it would be a problem, but why risk it?

I would most definatally call and find out what you need. It would be terrible to go all that way and be denied boarding.

goodluck and i will say a prayer for you. :flower:

I know that if a child is not traveling w/ a parent (or legal guardian), there needs to be a note/letter stating that it's ok for the child to travel w/o them (signed by a parent/legal guardian and notorized).

Hope this helps.

What if the children are traveling with me-their mom. My DH has passed away. Will they question where he is??? I obviously can't get a notorized letter from him, should I carry a copy of the death certificate too??

Technically they are supposed to ensure that both parents have given approval to travel out of the country. The assumption is that there are two parents who have rights and responsibilities for a child. When you check in at the terminal, the person checking you in does not know your circumstances.

If you are not one of the parents, it would be wise to have evidence showing that you have the permission of all parents with rights to the child. If you are not a parent, you should have evidence of the current status of both parents with regard to the child (both gave permission, one gave permission and has sole custody, one gave permission other deceased). If you are a parent traveling along, then evidence that you either have the permission of the other parent, that you have sole custody or that the other parent is deceased would be wise.

Remember, they don't know who you are or your story. Child abductions happen all the time and the person trying to sneak a child out of the country will stand there and say that their spouse is deceased or that they have sole custody etc.

Many people have reported that they have not been asked for this documentation. That's a bad thing, Disney should be checking to make sure that everything is on the up and up. However, others have reported that they have been asked. You don't want to get to the terminal, have the issue come up and be denied boarding. Better safe then sorry.

Last summer, I took my 15 year old nephew on DCL. When you receive your tickets from DCL their will be a parental consent page that you should fill out and get notarized. In addition to that, I had my brother fill out the below legal form which I edited to suit our needs. I think I also threw in a line about medical treatment should it be necessary.

By the way, I never needed to produce this letter. Better to be safe than sorry.

We took my 1 yr old nephew with notarized statement from my DS. Her husband was out of the country on military orders at the time so we took COPIES of his orders and her Power of attorney.

I would think you would be ok with a copy of the death certificate and the notarized statement from dcl docs from the surviving parent. The DCL certificate only covers permission while on the cruise so you might want another statement like the one the previous poster had to cover you in case your nephew would need anything while you are traveling to the boat.

If you are doing a Western Caribbean cruise (stopping in Cozumel) I would advise you to definately bring the death certificate. Mexico is very strict about the rules when children are not traveling with both parents. Other ports are not going to be as strict but I would recommend having a copy anyway. Like someone else said, better safe than sorry. Whether you will need one will depend on who is checking your documents.
