Do I have to book a room/ticket package to get in the parks early?

I'm a Universal first-timer and trying to figure out how to book this part of our trip. If I book our room and tickets separately (as opposed to a room/ticket package), do we still get in the parks early, or do we have to book a package to get that benefit? Thanks!

You just need to be staying onsite to get in early. If you are staying offsite, you must have the Harry Potter package.
