Do I have to bank this year's points to use them in 2018?

I have 159 2017 points and I want to use some for a Feb 2018 trip (Feb use year.) I went online to make the reservation, but it wants me to pick the points from 2018 or '19, no choice for 2017. Do I need to bank those 159 2017 points and then will they show up to use first?

Yes, bank the points first, then book. Only bank the number you need for the trip if you think you might still use points for a stay before February.

Just remember if you don't bank all now, you will need to do that by Sept 30th or they will need to be used by Jan 31st, 2018

And if you do bank them all, but decide at the last minute to take another trip during your 2017 UY, you can borrow from 2018 for that extra trip. But just like banking, borrowing is a final action. You cannot unborrow or unbank.

I think you meant take a last minute 2017 trip and borrow from 2018. OP is wanting to use 2017 points.
