Definitely need one in parks. Would rather not be bothered dragging one on and off buses. Would way rather rent at parks. But afraid parks will run out of them because of increased attendance. Dilemma.

You can give it a try, and if it's an issue you can contact one of the vendors while you are there to rent one, or you can rent one now, as mom used to say "better safe than sorry."

It is actually less expensive to rent off property. We needed to rent last year for a few days and had no problem with the overpriced Disney version. Plenty of them left.

Are you saying you were at Disney last xmas and parks did not run out of scooters?

I took my parents to Disney between Christmas and New Years several years ago. I had reserved scooters in September, and on the drive down received a call that they had discovered that they did not deliver to that hotel. (We were off property).

I called 4 different companies (thank God for smart phones and unlimited data plans) and ALL of them were out of scooters for the week.

We did manage to get scooters at Disney our first day there, and found business cards from another outside rental company on a scooter. Called, and they had 2 left that we rented for the next 3 days.

Each day in the parks, we were able to rent 1 from Disney, so yes, the parks did have some left that week, but I think it was only because we arrived before rope drop and were some of the first in line to rent one.

But the outside companies were pretty well completely booked out. I'd recommend that you either contact an outside company this past June to make sure OR plan to be at the park gates for rope-drop every day.

One thing to think about is that often parks close due to capacity during Christmas week. Without your own scooter, will you be able to do something else or will you be confined to your hotel?

Two years ago in Dec, it wasn't super crowded, but crowded enough that getting to the park in early afternoon, there was a two hour wait for the Disney scooters. I would think that during Xmas week, that would definitely be a big risk! Plus, it's definitely much cheaper to rent offsite. Did that last year and it was less than half of what Disney scooters would have cost! On and off buses didn't turn out to be the big deal we thought it would, it went pretty smoothly, so that would be my recommendation to be sure to get a scooter during a busy time!

Personally, I'd rather have an outside scooter rented ahead of time and be sure - if you find you don't need it you can always call and have them pick it up early. Then again, I've always been a better-safe-than-sorry kind of gal.

I was intimidated the first time I took one on a Disney bus, but it turned out to be a piece of cake. The drivers were all very friendly and helpful, and that long walk from the park entrance/resort room to the bus stop and back would have been murder on crutches.
