Is it just me, or do bad things seem to happen more around the holidays then any other time? Or is it just more upsetting when it happens during the holiday season?

The other day I posted my cat had died, and now I've found out that a regular customer at my store passed away. He was such a nice man, and I feel so sorry for his family.

It's not just this year though, in 2006 a friend of mine died on Thanksgiving day, and in 2005 I know someone who died on Christmas Eve. :sad1:

I love Christmas and all the special seasonal stuff going on, but it seems like every year something happens to put a damper on the holiday spirit.

Personally, I think it's just that we notice that the tragic event takes place so near a holiday. Tragedies happen year-round. It can't be avoided.

People and pets die every day of the year. Its just not around the holidays.

I hate the holidays for that particular reason. My grandmother has been in the hospital since before Thanksgiving (almost died, apparently). My father was diagnosed with cancer this day last year, years and years ago my grandfather got sick around Christmas. My good friend's aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before Thanksgiving. The aunt said it's not a great idea to get testing done before holidays - it's a real damper.

Bad things happen all the time. They just seem more magnified at the holidays.

Our friend just lost his mother in a car accident. I think losing someone around the holidays just every year reminds you of it more.

Things happen everyday, but it just seems to hit you harder at the holidays. I think the weather also has something to do with it, plus you are busy with other things.

Last year DFIL was in a local hospital with lung cancer and DS was in a VA hospital an hour away and it was a nightmare, but when the same thing happen in May, it was easier to cope because the days were longer, the weather wasn't an issue in driving and I wasn't as stressed for time so I dealt better.

I don't know, in my family, things always seem to happen around the holidays. My grandfather died right before New Years last year, my sister's FIL is in the hospital right now, not expected to live much longer, and this seems to be prime break-up time. Most of my relationships for some reason always end around the holidays.

I think that most of us (me included) have a secret desire for the perfect Christmas holiday. Where EVERYTHING is perfect.
Real life isn't perfect, it's filled with things both good, bad, and sad. When real life has the audacity to occur during our 'holiday' time it tends to burst our bubble and make a real impression on us.
In other words I agree with what several other folks have said, I don't think more bad stuff happens around the holidays but what does happen makes a bigger impression on us and upsets us even more.

Yes it is true bad things do happen all year round, but as said it stands out more during the holidays. You are all pumped up, happy and anticipating some great memories and then poof, something bad happens to take it down. Doesn't always happen that way though thank goodness.

Well I do agree with the other posters, all the bad things just get magnified during the holidays, you are in one mindset and then something else happens.

I just got diagnosed with cancer and am facing major 8 hour surgery Jan 7th. I am determined that this will be a good christmas for us no matter what. I want to laugh with my kids, watch the Disney parade, hear them read the christmas story from the Bible etc.,

If you lose a loved one the 1st holiday is really hard, I have done it with both my parents and my sister and I wish blessings to all those who have to go through such sadness during the holidays, but my faith gives me a great hope.

Things do get magnified when they happen around the holidays. My father passed away just after Thanksgiving so I am not in the mood for the holidays this year. Add to that other things that have been happening including emergency house repairs and lay offs at work and this holiday season is not going to be one of my favorites!

To luvmarypoppins, I hope everything goes well for you in January. I have read your other posts so will keep you on my prayers. To everyone, best wishes for better times ahead.
