I ask because the hire companies' websites are massively vague on what they allow... they list restrictions on young drivers hiring the car, but no conditions for additional drivers - I'll phone them when it comes time to book.
Not vague at all, from the
Alamo site, when you select an additonal driver during a reservation.
Additional Driver
Additional drivers on rentals that will be paid using a credit card are required to present their valid driver's license(s) and be present to sign the rental agreement.
Additional drivers on rentals that will be paid using a cash deposit (See 'Cash, Renting With') are permitted as long as they present their major Alamo honored credit card. All additional drivers must be present to show their driver's licenses and sign the rental agreement.
Spouses acting as the additional driver on cash rentals and are not required to have a separate credit card.
An Additional Driver fee is required at most locations.
Locations in Canada, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean have unlimited additional drivers.
A maximum of 2 additional drivers is permitted per rental for all other locations.
Additional Driver Under Age 25
In the United States & Canada, Alamo assesses a fee for drivers under age 25. In some states, the minimum age for rental is 18 years of age and Alamo collects a higher fee for drivers aged 18-20. The minimum age of Military/Government personnel on official orders renting with Alamo's government rate is 18 years old.
For information on other countries, please see the 'rental policies' section of the site.
