Do any car hire companies allow 18yr old drivers?

As title,

Going out in October and would like to know if this is at all possible (not as the main driver though). Not holding my breath, but I figured it would be worth asking.

Cheers,
JP

Most car companies will allow additional drivers under 25 years old BUT you will pay a heavy surcharge for it. It may not be financially worth it.

Thanks...

I ask because the hire companies' websites are massively vague on what they allow... they list restrictions on young drivers hiring the car, but no conditions for additional drivers - I'll phone them when it comes time to book.

Not vague at all, from the Alamo site, when you select an additonal driver during a reservation.

Additional Driver
Additional drivers on rentals that will be paid using a credit card are required to present their valid driver's license(s) and be present to sign the rental agreement.

Additional drivers on rentals that will be paid using a cash deposit (See 'Cash, Renting With') are permitted as long as they present their major Alamo honored credit card. All additional drivers must be present to show their driver's licenses and sign the rental agreement.

Spouses acting as the additional driver on cash rentals and are not required to have a separate credit card.

An Additional Driver fee is required at most locations.

Locations in Canada, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean have unlimited additional drivers.

A maximum of 2 additional drivers is permitted per rental for all other locations.

Additional Driver Under Age 25
In the United States & Canada, Alamo assesses a fee for drivers under age 25. In some states, the minimum age for rental is 18 years of age and Alamo collects a higher fee for drivers aged 18-20. The minimum age of Military/Government personnel on official orders renting with Alamo's government rate is 18 years old.

For information on other countries, please see the 'rental policies' section of the site.

I hadn't considered Alamo because I thought they were offsite at Orlando International? Or am I wrong about that... I know they used to be when my family used them last, but that was a while back.

They are no longer off-site.

Oh, and thank you for that info! :teeth:

You are quite welcome. Alamo moved onsite a couple of years ago. They are now the official rental car of WDW and share counter and garage space with National. In fact they share cars also.

Although you might be able to find a small company that will allow an 18 year old driver the surcharges and insurance surcharge (I note you're from Scotland) will make it prohibitive. Either stay on site and use Disney tranporation or at least stay close enough to use a cab as necessary.

We will be staying on-property, (OKW villas), but we're also travelling about to malls, USO, and also down to Vero Beach for a week, so we were trying to work out if we could share driving duties a bit more.

Thanks for the help everyone, we'll just ask and see what they say
