My DB1 and SIL are taking my nephews (age 5 and 3) to WDW in March after SIL gets her Masters degree. The went when the oldest was three and the youngest was just 9 months. I was talking to DN5 about going to WDW. I asked him if he was going to ride the roller costers, he said he might not be tall enough. I asked if he was excited to ride the rides with DN3 and he said yes, because DN3 was too little to remember WDW. Then I asked him if he was excited to see Mickey and his friends."

"Oh Auntie, they aren't real, they are just costumes! I know, because on tv Chip and Dale are small, but at WDW they are big."

Now, a small part of me is kinda proud that he's smart enought to figure it out. The rest of me is shocked and sadend that he doesn't believe!

I told him that Chip and Dale are little on tv because everything is little on tv! :teeth: He didn't quite seem to buy it. I told him he should check it out when he goes to WDW and report back to me. I'm hoping if he meets some of the face charactors, he might rethink his theory!

Don't worry, my DS5 goes back and forth. He's told me before that he doesn't think that they are real that they are dressed up, but lately he believes that they are all real. I just never reallyl answer him, i always say "what do you think" and that I think that they are real and some people just don't believe, but I do. It seems to work for him. So maybe tell him that he may think that they are fake, but you believe that they are real and maybe he'll take your lead.

DD has never believed in anything dressed in a costume and I never encouraged her one way or the other. If she asked, I'd always say "what do you think?" She knew since she saw the easter Bunny at the mall and his side zipper wasn't zipped all the way and she could see his "street clothes".

Never has this ever effected her fun at WDW though or the magic that comes from Disney!

I agree. Even when DS said he didn't believe, he was so in awe and loved the characters so much when he saw them. I think that is what made him change his mind and believe that they were real. Either way, they were magical to him. I think your DN will be just fine!

We explained about people in costumes when the kids were three and terrified of being stung by the gigantic bee (a radio station mascot) at the grocery store. When we went to WDW for the first time, they understood that there were also people in costumes there, but it didn't ruin everything for them. Talking to characters and getting autographs was the highlight of the trip.

As long as YOU still believe he's real, it's gonna be alright. :cool1:

I truly don't understand this thought process. I would really fear for my children's intelligence if they thought these characters were real. :rolleyes1
