I’m planning to return to MCO to pick up a rental car after our stay in Disney. When I booked our Magic Express pick-up the CM told me I’d have to arrange my DME return time to the airport a day before at the front desk and that I couldn’t arrange it now. Does this sound right? I’ve never done this before. Thanks for any advice.

No. Look at the two (I think) pinned DME-related threads. There is a direct phone number for DME, starting with 866.

Yes, 866-599-0951. Have your reservation number and desired airport arrival time at hand. The DME direct number customer service agents know their stuff. The Disney cast members only know how to enter flight information into the same online form you can access yourself. Anything else is best handled with a short, efficient phone call directly to the DME number.

It is also possible to rent a car from the Car Care Center on Disney Property (they also shuttle you to/from your Disney hotel) and at Swan/Dolphin. If for some reason you don't really need to go back to the airport.

I would highly recommend renting from Dolphin location, as a one way rental to MCO or wherever you are want to terminate the rental. You can catch a bus/boat there from any of the parks, then drive to your resort for luggage/people pickup. Much quicker than a trip to MCO.

Are you planning to have all people & luggage with you when you ride DME to MCO?

There's a few rental desks within a walk from Disney Springs if you spend a lot of time there.

I've only used MCO as a way stop for rental cars when coming in from the north & proceeding on site w/o a car & using DME to get me there.

That worked perfectly, Ralph/Pam. The DME folks are much more on the ball. Everything is set. Thanks everyone for your help.
