DME Luggage tags and Rental car

We are flying in tomorrow and I am hearing DME might be crazy over the holidays.
We are thinking about renting a car when we get to the airport but I was wondering what would happen to our luggage if the tags were on it and we rented a car instead of DME.

Does the tagged bags go to claim or straight to DME?

If you are thinking of renting a car, walk up car rental reservations can be pricey - happened to my FIL. So you might want to make a reservation before getting there and cancel it if you don't need it.

If you are unsure about whether you will need a rental car, keep the Magical Express reservation in place and you can feel free to use the yellow DME tags. Should you have a rental car, one person can go get the car while everyone else rides DME. When you check into the DME welcoming area at the airport, they will get the necessary information (like how many bags) to ensure proper handling of the bags.

(+1) Regarding rental cars, always reserve in advance. Otherwise you may only find expensive cars. Once in an earlier lifetime I was strolling past the rental care counter on my way to the subway station and I eavesdropped on more than one conversation at more than one counter where some customers walked up and saw a "cars available" sign and the agent started his answer to the customers' inquiry with, "We have full size cars."

As noted, it can be very expensive to rent a car without an existing reservation...and at this point, that is probably going to be the case.
I would just take DME and not worry about it.
