Divas, Zebra Domes, and Pixie Dust! A Week in an African Paradise! New TR Link Pg.145

What a wonderful AK day!

How cool about the giraffe. They are such neat animals. I am always a little apprehensive about those rhinos. They seem a little scary and aggressive.

Safari Eeyore was perfectly equipped for your adventure!

Charles comes and has lunch and rides one ride! Wow. I'm glad he was feeling better though.

I'm glad someone likes those not so deep Disney pools. I feel like I have to crawl around on my knees to actually swim! :rotfl2:

I really need to try a zebra dome and those night vision goggles! Sounds like a lot of fun!

AKL sounds so wonderful. What a great resort to relax at after a day in the parks, so much to see and do! It's a wonder you ever got your kids to go to the parks.

What a wonderful encounter with the giraffe. I don't know how many times I done the safari with not problems, but lately I've read numerous accounts of the giraffes stopping jeeps. When we did it last month it wasn't a giraffe but the rhino had the jeep in front of us stopped, he just wouldn't move from the road. Three trucks showed up to try and get him to move.

I know I haven't been around on this trip report since the very beginning, but I'm finaaalllllly ALL caught up!

The AKL pool looks awesome! We definitely have to go check out that resort on our September trip! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read more!

Great safari! We had a rhino right by our truck as well. I think I could have touched him if I wanted to....I DIDN'T!!!! Relaxing by the pool sounds like :cloud9:!

Alas, due to the 150-degree heat, Connor’s bar had managed to melt and drip and half of it fall onto the table before I had more than a fleeting thought of getting the camera out. Chelsea further added insult to Connor’s injury when she started laughing. Karma’s long arm of retribution acted swiftly though and her own Mickey bar also collapsed into a melted mess upon the table. So much for that idea. We headed for the safari.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

My favorite animal encounter EVAH!

Super cool! :thumbsup2

Then, we headed for the night vision viewing. In the words of Connor, “It was so cool!” We stood there looking out over the savannah, and it looked completely empty. But when we used the night vision goggles, we could see herds of zebra moving around. Too neat! However, the mosquitoes were brutal, and all three of us (Charles doesn’t get bit for some reason) ended up covered in mosquito bites from our evening encounter. To anyone staying at AKL, take bug spray with you if you plan to be outside at night!

Sounds awesome!!!

I like Safari Eeyore. He is so cute. I love your giraffe. How neat to see one that close. It would not be a good thing if your jeep was charged by a rhino. I know that others have said it but the kids have grown up so much the past year. I am really looking forward to your next update.

What a fantastic update! I am in love with your giraffe soo cool! Glad you made it to lunch before the rain...and so glad Charles got his one ride in. You make me so excited to stay at AKL.. but I will remember to bring bug spray. Em gets ate alive!

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: I love it! Yes, I knew I should have packed my crystal ball!

See, if I had taken a picture of her like Wigd said, you would know for sure that it was the same woman. LOL!

:rotfl2::worship::rotfl2: That is a great idea. In fact, the next time I encounter a rude person I am going to wip out my camera and say, "Can I take your picture, puleeezzzzeeeeee" "Thank you" Mah ha ha Now I plan to post it all over the Dis boards. See how popular you become in a very short period of time!

I love your latest update. In fact, I love it so much that I am going back tomorrow to read it again when I have my morning brain on. Your Charles sounds a lot like my DH. We call him "Directionless Denny" because when asked to meet me at Pizzafari he would definately say, "I don't know where that is".

Safari Eeyore is adorable! I'm glad he was out to enjoy the ride. ;) And what a ride it was! That is amazing about the giraffe!! The pictures of her are beautiful. Love the ones of you guys relaxing at the rocking chairs too....what a great evening!

Wow Jackie, that update was jam-packed with so many goodies, I don't know where to start!!

Such an awesome experience with Ms. Giraffe on safari. I wonder if the impending rainstorm made them more sociable?

Poor kids... I remember what it was like to have ice cream melt right off the stick and onto the ground!! :sad2:

So glad you didn't get soaked and that Charles was feeling better. I really did LOL when you told the story about him moving the table over six inches!! :lmao: Classic!!

Ahhh, the Lodge. I cannot wait to stay at Kidani Village. I plan to spend the entire first day just relaxing and exploring! (And I will definitely pack the bug spray, thanks!)

Kathy

I really enjoyed that chapter! I love Pizzafari and we always sit back there too! I can picture it now *sigh*

We did the night vision at the AKL last august, we loved it!

I'm in the mood for making lists...
1. Poor, poor Connor and his melting Mickey bar....:sad2:
2. I wondered where you shot that picture of Ms. Giraffe!
3. Yea :cheer2: for Charles, lunch AND a ride!
4. Where exactly do you go for the night vision goggles?

Hi! I am new to DIS and really enjoying your TR!! I am def. putting AKL on my "Must Stay in the Near Future" list! It looks awesome:love: Can't wait to read more! Oh--and your kids are adorable!

Hi! Great TR! I just came out of lurkdom to second the idea to bring bug spray to AKL. The ONLY time I have EVER gotten bitten by mosquitos at Disneyworld was when we went out to use the night goggles at AKL (we were there the same time as you). And it was a fast and brutal attack as I danced from foot to foot awaiting my turn to use the goggles. In fact, I probably used the goggles for a shorter period of time than if I had not been being dive bombed and itching, so the thought occurred to me that maybe they don't spray out there at the viewing area (since that was the only place I noticed mosquitos biting) on purpose :rotfl: cause the line was moving rather purposefully and quickly. But then my roommate said no (with eyes rolling), they probably don't use any or are at least careful about use of pesticides, including bug sprays, because of the animals on the savannahs--that made sense.

Your safari pics are so good! We had a close encounter with the giraffes in December and it was the neatest thing ever! They're such beautiful animals.

That's funny...your hubby knew where the Dawa was but not the restaurant. :rotfl2:

Wow first let me say how jeolous I am of your incounter with the giraff as they are my favorite. I did get to feed one at the Riverbanks zoo in Columbia last month, but he was not up for being petted, though I did try. He took the food right out of my hand and I barely felt his teeth.
I am getting soo excited about our stay in Jan. there. We so need to explore AK more this next time.

We moved through the line and were soon shifting to get comfortable on our two-week safari. Eeyore was very excited and was even wearing the proper attire.

Great update! Needless to say, the giraffe picture is incredible.

I like this picture of Connor and Eeyore. I used Eeyore, Tigger, and Pooh in safari attire on my outside bulletin board this year with a phrase about third-grade being an adventure. I got a touch of Disney before I even walked into my classroom every morning. pooh: :eeyore: :tigger:

I knew the AKL pool would be a hit with the kids. And it's such a beautiful place to just sit back and soak up the atmosphere, read, etc. while they played. I bet you've pictured yourself back there a few times since you've been home, huh?

I can't wait to do the Safari ride, it was my favorite thing in AK last time we went (way too long ago). Charles day sounds like my DH's dream vacation - big breakfast, nap, lunch, one ride, afternoon by the pool. Too bad Charles wasn't feeling well enough to really enjoy his leisurely pace! Really enjoyed the update!:goodvibes

you guys had a great safari ride!!!
how neat to to see the animals with the night vision goggles.

We did! It was the best safari ride we have ever done!

It was very cool to see the animals with the night vision goggles! Really without them, the savannah looked completely empty.

Oh my, what a fantastic update! That giraffe encounter is super duper special. I thought it was cool when a giraffe crossed the road in front of our jeep but it wasn't anything as cool as your experience!

Sounds like a great relaxing evening at the pool.

I am loving your TR.

Thank you! Yes, I have never seen giraffes get so close to the vehicles before!

It was very relaxing by the pool -- the kids just played and played.

Great update!! Well at least Charles got the best ride in that day. We love EE!!
What GREAT pics of the giraffe!! So did it ever rain on you that day?? It sounds like you had a great time by the pool. Cannot wait for the next installment...

Yes, Charles was happy that he got to ride Everest. Thank you, I was very pleased with how the pictures came out. Nope, no rain on us -- I think it rained pretty hard for a little bit, but we just stayed at Pizzafari enjoying our meal.

But I know exactly how they feel!

Me too! We tend to be a cranky family when we are hungry!

OMG. Fit of giggles. You are on a roll! But :headache: to the lost Mickey Bars - that is unfortunate.

I felt bad for Chelsea and Connor -- more so with Connor since his sister laughed at him -- and then I felt bad for me having to clean up the melted mess.

Hmmm... somewhat suspicious. And yet respectable at the same time.

I know, right? ;)

Eeyore is just adorable. I may have to find his twin to come home with me!

Connor has slept with him every night since we returned.

Well I wouldn't have made the connection so good for you!!

I didn't until one morning when I was looking at the AKL magnet on my fridge and saw the bird. Then I thought, "Hey, that's the same bird we saw on the safari."

Argh! The storms are following you! :headache:

That's what I thought, too.

OMG! Definitely the best EVAH! WOW! And how cute is your giraffe!?! :goodvibes

I was so thrilled!

Glad you escaped the rain. Too bad about the character line snaking by your table!

At the time I was seething. The room was completely empty except for us so I don't know why it couldn't have snaked in a different direction.

And just like that a DIS trend is started... :rolleyes1

I seem to be drawn to the signs when we are at Animal Kingdom.

I know just where your spot is! Perfect!! :thumbsup2

The night vision is cool? I was bummed I didn't get to do that. Next time! :thumbsup2

Looking forward to more! popcorn:: :upsidedow

Yes, you should plan another stay at AKL for the night vision! :thumbsup2

What a wonderful AK day!

How cool about the giraffe. They are such neat animals. I am always a little apprehensive about those rhinos. They seem a little scary and aggressive.

They do seem scary and aggressive. I didn't even want to take a picture because I didn't want to make him angry if he heard a clicking sound unexpectedly. LOL!

Safari Eeyore was perfectly equipped for your adventure!

Connor loves his Safari Eeyore -- he will not go to bed until he has him and Pirate Mickey and Baseball Bear with him.

He hung out with us the rest of the day and didn't seem too bothered that he had missed so much park time.

:lmao: Yes, I like how shallow the Disney pools are because then I don't have to be quite so on my guard while the kids swim. They are very good swimmers but I get nervous when the water is deep.

Yes, there are so many cool things to do at AKL!

It's a wonder I ever wanted to go to the parks.

I didn't realize the giraffes were getting to be so friendly. They must be getting very comfortable!

Wow! I can't believe it took three trucks to edge the rhino off the road -- those things are huge though!

I know I haven't been around on this trip report since the very beginning, but I'm finaaalllllly ALL caught up!

The AKL pool looks awesome! We definitely have to go check out that resort on our September trip! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read more!

Hurray for being caught up again! Yes, AKL is a beautiful resort!

Great safari! We had a rhino right by our truck as well. I think I could have touched him if I wanted to....I DIDN'T!!!! Relaxing by the pool sounds like :cloud9:!

I wouldn't want to touch the rhino either -- I would be worried it would be the last thing I would ever do! LOL!

I think I even said to Chelsea, "That's what happens when you laugh at your brother's misfortune!" ;)

Super cool! :thumbsup2

Sounds awesome!!!

We had a great time that afternoon and evening!

I like Safari Eeyore. He is so cute. I love your giraffe. How neat to see one that close. It would not be a good thing if your jeep was charged by a rhino. I know that others have said it but the kids have grown up so much the past year. I am really looking forward to your next update.

Thank you! No, it would not have been a good thing to have the rhino charge the jeep -- although I wonder if Disney would have given me a DVC membership for my emotional trauma...LOL! They are growing up soooo fast! Chelsea turns 12 on the 17th -- I can't quite believe it!

What a fantastic update! I am in love with your giraffe soo cool! Glad you made it to lunch before the rain...and so glad Charles got his one ride in. You make me so excited to stay at AKL.. but I will remember to bring bug spray. Em gets ate alive!

Thank you! I love that giraffe -- and I saw a LOT of giraffes on this trip -- I think she is my favorite though. Yes, pack the bug spray for AKL -- I used to pack it all the time, but we have never had a problem with mosquitoes at Disney before -- that area by the night vision was swarming with them though.

He he! That would be perfect!

I love your latest update. In fact, I love it so much that I am going back tomorrow to read it again when I have my morning brain on. Your Charles sounds a lot like my DH. We call him "Directionless Denny" because when asked to meet me at Pizzafari he would definately say, "I don't know where that is".

Clearly, our DHs are not noticing the details on their journeys through the park. LOL!

Safari Eeyore is adorable! I'm glad he was out to enjoy the ride. ;) And what a ride it was! That is amazing about the giraffe!! The pictures of her are beautiful. Love the ones of you guys relaxing at the rocking chairs too....what a great evening!

Thank you! Yes, Eeyore and Connor enjoyed their first safari ride together. We were in awe of that giraffe!

Wow Jackie, that update was jam-packed with so many goodies, I don't know where to start!!

Such an awesome experience with Ms. Giraffe on safari. I wonder if the impending rainstorm made them more sociable?

Thank you! You know I didn't think of the rain affecting the giraffes, but now I wonder if that is why -- good idea!

Poor kids... I remember what it was like to have ice cream melt right off the stick and onto the ground!! :sad2:

Me too -- and those Mickey bars were melting faster than the kids could lick.

So glad you didn't get soaked and that Charles was feeling better. I really did LOL when you told the story about him moving the table over six inches!! :lmao: Classic!!

I know! Like moving it six inches was really going to make a difference. LOL!

Ahhh, the Lodge. I cannot wait to stay at Kidani Village. I plan to spend the entire first day just relaxing and exploring! (And I will definitely pack the bug spray, thanks!)

You will be able to fill your day easily -- there is soooo much to do at AKL!

I really enjoyed that chapter! I love Pizzafari and we always sit back there too! I can picture it now *sigh*

We did the night vision at the AKL last august, we loved it!

Thank you! We were very pleased with our meal there -- I just loved that Italian sandwich -- it was super yummy!

LOL! I will "list" back to you...;)
1. I know -- I felt bad for him.
2. Yep, up close on the safari!
3. He was pleased and we were pleased to have him in the park for a little bit.
4. The night vision is behind the Uzima Pool over to the left. I am not sure where it is at Kidani.

Hi! I am new to DIS and really enjoying your TR!! I am def. putting AKL on my "Must Stay in the Near Future" list! It looks awesome:love: Can't wait to read more! Oh--and your kids are adorable!

:welcome: Thank you for coming over! AKL is such a fabulous place to stay -- it is my hands-down favorite and we have stayed at quite a few over the years.

Hi!

Hi! Come out of lurkdom more often! :goodvibes I completely agree -- we have never had a problem with mosquitoes at Disney, and we are human bug attracters -- they love us for some reason. AKL was the first time we have ever been just eaten alive by them, and the night vision area was the worst. I must have looked like I was doing some sort of weird jazz dance the way I was hopping around and slapping my legs the whole time.

Your safari pics are so good! We had a close encounter with the giraffes in December and it was the neatest thing ever! They're such beautiful animals.

That's funny...your hubby knew where the Dawa was but not the restaurant. :rotfl2:

Thank you! Those giraffes are just gorgeous!

You can see where Charles' priorities lie! He probably knows where all the adult beverages are located around the World. LOL!

So neat that you got to feed one of the giraffes at Riverbank -- is that a regular thing that they do???

Great update! Needless to say, the giraffe picture is incredible.

Thank you! I think I am going to get a larger size print done to put in my bathroom -- it seems to be where all the giraffe stuff is migrating.

What a great idea! I used your idea last year of using my pins on my bulletin board for notices -- it made me smile everytime I would glance at them.

I knew the AKL pool would be a hit with the kids. And it's such a beautiful place to just sit back and soak up the atmosphere, read, etc. while they played. I bet you've pictured yourself back there a few times since you've been home, huh?

I have pictured myself there quite a few times! I know the kids have, too, because every time we head to the pool in our neighborhood, Connor pipes up, "I wish our pool was like a Disney pool." LOL!

We always have a great time on the Safari.

Charles was enjoying his slow pace that Sunday -- once he met back up with us, he felt fine for the rest of the day.
