We are flying into orlando on monday for a week of camping at Fort Wilderness. We will have several
very heavy bags (tent, etc) and I'm wondering how far it is until I can load it in the rental van?
I'm hoping that there isn't a shuttle ride involved, I will be there with 5 bags, 4 children, a car seat, and a stroller! thanks for your help!

There is no shuttle involved, but you do have to exit the terminal, cross the street and go one level up to get to the cars. It really isn't that bad. You can get one of those rolling carts to put your stuff on.

The cars are at the airport; once through the counter you go out the terminal, across the street to the car rental parking lot and then to car. It actually can be quite a trek though depending on where the particular car is. Options are to get one of the airport service employees who will haul your luggage over on a cart (and you tip) or have one person get the car and drive it around and come back to the door of the terminal where others can wait with the luggage.
