Dispicable act by US customs against married gay couple.

Well, I hate to say "old news" as it was 2003...unfortunately, the same would probably happen today. The US federal gov't does not acknowledge same sex marriages, so, legally, a same sex couple, even if legally married elsewhere, is not considered "married" under US law, the federal gov't does not recognize any same sex relationship as family, except those related by blood (brothers, parent/child, etc)...thus, legally, the couple is not eligible to use the form for "families." While I certainly disagree with the gov't position on gay marriage...given the circumstances, the customs agents hands were tied.

I just think it is horrible I am glad that gay couples can marry legally up here in Canada I have a cousin who is gay and just got marries 3 weeks ago. I do not see why a gay couple shouldn't able to get married and be eligible for the same rights as my wife and I are it is an archaic system to not allow this IMHO.

While it is sad that the US does not recognize same sex unions, until we do, the customs officials were abiding by the law. It is unfortunate that we don't include this couple in our legal definition of family, but some of the people quoted in that article were being a bit disingenuous. These men were *not* denied entry for being gay or for being a couple. They were denied entry for refusing to fill out the required piece of paper. They *chose* to make that form more important than their travel plans.

Americans who oppose gay marriage will have to accept it as a fact when they travel to Canada. Canadians will have to accept that it is not acknowledged in the US. Every country has its quirks and when visiting other countries, one must respect their laws and customs.

I believe that recognition of same-sex partnerships (marriage in actuality if not in name) will be a reality in the US within the next five years. Until then, foreign visitors will just have to be tolerant. Nations, like children, grow and develop at different paces in different areas.
