Plan: Check-in Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort

Actual: We left Indianapolis 2 hours behind schedule and what a HUGE difference that made. There was a rock-slide a few weeks back and I-40 was closed with a detour – a 50 minute extra detour. We arrived to Hilton Head Island around 8:00 pm. Checked in at the resort about 8:30pm and check in was a breeze. (I totally forgot to check-in online before we left home) We received our Keys to the World, even though we were on the Island, member perks book, maps, weekly activity sheet, and tour books. Our ‘home” – 1623. We were amazed at the size of the 2 Bedroom Villa. For a family of 5, spacious! By the time we unloaded the car it was about quarter past 9. We headed out for Walmart. I thought “great we can get the grocery shopping done, they close at 11pm”. But, where are the grocery aisles? Is this all the eggs? Where is the meat? No vegetables? :confused3 So, we asked someone was this a Walmart with a grocery store? Oh no, you need to go to Publix, but they close at (look at watch) 10 pm (scrunch face). Why? Because it is 9:45 and there is no way I can get there and get groceries in 15 minutes. No amount of Pixie Dust could help me at this point. So, we bought a few things and came “home”. Everyone was pooped. Night Night.

Plan: Relax and Enjoy Hilton Head Island and the Resort

Actual: DS wakes up and runs to my room, “It’s morning time!” DH quickly tells him to “watch TV in your room”, it is too early to move. I woke up at 8 something, threw on clothes, did the tooth and face thing and grabbed keys to go to Piggly Wiggly. DD (12) wanted to come, so I checked my Blackberry for missed calls and emails from yesterday. While we are driving, I try to keep to my family and enjoy talking with my husband – uninterrupted. Yes, the kids are watching movies, sleeping, video gaming or listening to music and not listening to us.

Anywho, we shopped, cooked breakfast (biscuits, eggs, bacon), ate and headed for the Big Dipper Pool. Woo-hoo, we had the entire pool to ourselves. At this point, I know that Disney built this resort for me and only me! We had a great time, even in the rain. We dipped into the hot tub for a few minutes, bought refillable mugs, checked out the Broad Creek Mercantile store, Community Hall, and Shuffle Board. We have a Horseshoe Pit and Basketball Court near us. We returned “home” for lunch (soup and sandwiches). Then we were off to see the Island. We went to the Beach House. Absolutely wonderful! We were only going to take photos, it was after 4pm and cloudy. The view of the ocean – WOW! Next, we went to the Mall and shopped. Headed back “home” for dinner. Ratatouille! Peach Cobbler for dessert. Yummy! Watched the Wizard of Oz (DH’s choice) and went Night Night.

Plan: Travel to Savannah, GA, Eat at Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, Tour the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (Founder of Girl Scouts of the USA)

Actual: Hurricane Ida was to hit HHI, so we thought we better not stray to far from “home”. The girls agreed that we would make a special trip to Savannah, GA and they even mentioned making it a troop outing. I will definitely have to talk to each troop’s Moms and Do-Dads about that! So, we lounged in the AM, ate breakfast (French Toast and sausage patties), got ready to go to the Beachhouse, and then… I got a call! I have been selected to participate in the 2010 Walt Disney World Moms Panel! I cried and kept smiling. We were so excited. We missed our window of opportunity to get some time at the beach house before Ida hit. So, we ventured out on the Island – in the rain. (But, how cool was it to find out I was selected while at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort? Way Cool!)

We went to the Porsche and Jaguar/Land Rover dealerships. We were headed to Target for umbrellas and a toothbrush. DD (8) left her toothbrush at home and did not tell us until this morning! GROSS! And she has braces, you can only imagine. But, DVC Son fell asleep on the way, so we went “browsing” in Ida for a while. The new Porsche Panamera is pretty slick! My DH loves the new Jags, I think it is because he attends IUPUI and they are the Jaguars! Ha! We sat in a really nice Range Rover, just sat and enjoyed a dream. Then reality plopped us back into the Suburban and we were off the Target. :)

Of course, Ida hit the hardest as we got out to go into Target. I thought we cold do with one umbrella and realized that I was crazy! Three umbrellas, UP on DVD and digital copy, toothbrush, toothpaste (don’t ask), baby lotion (really don’t ask) and candy purchases later, we were outta there and on our way “home”.

The girls helped me prepare Pepper Steak, Rice and Pan Rolls. We had Rootbeer Floats for dessert. Then, I could tell the world of my wonderful, exciting, marvelous news!

I am a 2010 Walt Disney World Moms Panelist!

Happy, so very happy! My DH has been the greatest. He held me when I cried and laughed with me for over emoting! He is awesome. BTW, my DD (12) came to show me that Disney published the series of books she is reading – The Van Alen Legacy: a Blue Bloods novel. :) Night Night!

Plan: Relax and Enjoy Hilton Head Island and the Resort

Actual: Hurricane Ida gave us an early morning break, so we headed over to the Beach house before breakfast. It was a cloudy 72 degrees. We went out to the Atlantic Ocean first. Absolutely beautiful and serene. I felt so close to heaven and at peace. The water was COLD, but we had a good time catching waves and playing in the sand.

We decided to head back to the Beach house to swim before the rain. We had too much fun! A little volleyball and a lot of water play. Then the rain came, but we were already wet, so, Hakuna Matata! We agreed that as long as there was no lightening, we would stay. The water was a warm 83 degrees, so we were great! We finally were hungry enough to leave.

We came “home”, showered, dressed and made breakfast- no, it would be lunch (eggs, bacon, grilled cheese). My DH and I checked a few emails and then we left to explore the island. We went to a few local shops and got souvenirs. We ran into the grocery store, because DH wanted jalapenos for Taco Night. Yes, tonight is Taco Night – taquitos, tacos, salsa, guacamole, tortillas, and toppings galore. DS proclaimed that we would watch UP for Taco Night and everyone agreed.

So, back to earlier, we decided that we would visit Harbourtown and the Lighthouse. We really enjoyed the self-tour. There was great history. Even though it was windy, the view was awesome. We got more souvenirs. We enjoyed riding around the Island.

By the time we got “home”, it was time to prepare dinner. Taco Night is always a big hit! UP was good. We went to see it opening night in 3D, but I always enjoy watching a movie the 2nd time. I seem to catch so many things that were missed with the excitement of the 1st viewing. We started packing up for our departure in the AM. We all agree that next time we need to stay 7 days and 6 nights. We also missed a lot of the outdoor activities because of Ida. I think we will try for a late Spring/Early Summer trip next time. Of course, I will need all the Pixie Dust I can get, because, I know that a 7-month window to book will be a challenge.

Plan: Drive to Orlando, Check-in Disney’s Boardwalk Inn, Swimming at Luna Park Pool, Eat at ESPN Club, Miniature Golf at Disney's Fantasia Gardens Miniature Golf Course

Actual: We said good-bye to our HHI “home” at about 10 am. This would be 1 hour behind schedule. Plus, DH insisted we stop at the “Island Car Wash” for an Express Car Wash, so $9.00 later, we were on our way to Orlando. We stopped at Red Lobster in Jacksonville, FL for lunch. Everyone was surprised to see the kids at lunch time. We had to tell them we were from Indianapolis and the kids were on break. But, if they weren’t, so what. Would it be so wrong for the kids to miss a week of school for Disney? Of course not! :-D

We arrived to Disney’s Boardwalk Inn just after 5pm. I had completed online check-in, so everything was ready when we arrived. We were given room 3298 and we got the junior-size day bed. Well, it is actually more like a twin bed and it is pretty cool to set up. A big transition for the 2 bedroom villa to our room here, but we are so excited to stay at the Boardwalk for the first time, no one really cares!

We decided to go against the advice of DH and bring our jackets to dinner. Once we got down to the Boardwalk, we knew we would need to go back and get them after we left ESPN Club. We really enjoyed dinner. They were doing the ESPN Live Show and had give-a-ways. FUN! We went back up to get our jackets and decided to head over to Fantasia Gardens for miniature golf. On our way, we stopped to see a magic trick and my DS volunteered to participate. He was sooo cute! He did a great job, my little actor!

Fantasia Gardens was silly and relaxing. Imagine a 4 year old playing miniature golf. Then, imagine an 8 year old. Very interesting! Of course, my DH, DD (12) and I were competing. We are a very competitive family. We led the younger two to believe they wer in the competition, as well. My DH won. He got 3 hole-in-ones. We really had a good time. The walk over and back from the Boardwalk was perfect. We even found a Bunny in the gardens. The night was magical. We got great photos and really enjoyed ourselves.

I made sure to call “Wake-up Call” and set a 7am wake-up. My conference begins tomorrow and I need to get registered by 8am. We are excited for tomorrow’s magic. Night Night.

Plan: Breakfast at 'Ohana's Best Friends Breakfast with Lilo and Stitch, Swimming at Luna Park Pool, Lunch at Big River Grille & Brewing Works, Epcot (Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure), Dinner at Electric Umbrella

Actual: We got off to a slow start this morning. Five people sharing one small bathroom, enough said. On top of that, the shower drain was SLOOOOOOW! I called “Engineering Services” before I left for my conference. We had breakfast reservations at ‘Ohana for 9:30 am. Because, I was coming from the first hour of conference, we decided to drive over. So, DH took the wheel and with the help of GPS, we were at the Magic Kingdom parking gate in under 10 minutes. We didn’t have to pay, because we were staying on Disney property. We just showed our Boardwalk parking pass and off we went. The wrong way! We had missed the ramp to the right toward the Polynesian Resort. We had to circle around and (Disney thinks of everything and knew this happens) we took the turnaround back to the Magic Kingdom parking gate. We re-showed our Resort parking pass and went to the right. We arrived at the Polynesian Resort with 10 minutes to spare. :cool1:

Aloha! Disney’s Polynesian Resort is beautiful. My DS get telling me to take pictures of the waterfalls (there are several). He didn’t remember that we were just here in June for the Spirit of Aloha Polynesian Luau . He acted as if he were seeing everything for the first time. I love it when that happens!

We got checked in, took our family photo and waited to be seated. About 15 minutes until 10am, we were seated. Ooh, the Hawaiian bread smelled good. DS and DD(8) carried our 2 baskets to our table. Great view! We were at the window in front of the Seven Seas Lagoon. We could see Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and the Magic Kingdom. We had a blast! DS and DD(8) enjoyed the character parade with all the other kids around the restaurant. The food was remarkable good. http://allears.net/menu/menu_ohb.htm My DH was jealous of the attention Mickey Mouse was giving me!

We finished breakfast just after 11:15 am and shopped for a few items at BouTIKI. We made it back to the resort, changed into our swim clothes and made it to Luna Park Pool by Noon. We were on a mission! Ha!

The weather was a sunny 72 degrees, but there was a breeze. And it was a noticeable breeze in the pool. The lifeguard on duty said the water was 83 degrees, but it did not feel like it. It was slow to get DH and DD(12) into the pool, but it warmed up after we were all the way in and they agreed. Everyone except DH did the Keister Coaster Slide. FUN! We enjoyed playing around, but missed the Hilton Head Beach House and the volleyball. I think I will bring some water activities with us next time. We got dried off and went back upstairs to the room to shower and dress.

Well, the shower drain was fixed, not sure when, but glad not to stand in dirty water. :thumbsup2 We were supposed to be at Epcot at 2pm. I purchased the convention attendee’s after 2pm park tickets for both days at the parks. A good savings and I never know the conference topics until registration. So, I never know if I will send the family along without me for fun, or if I will tag-a-long. This option is a good one for us. Well, it was 2pm and we were still at the resort. I was mad! I don’t know why I thought 5 people could get ready in under an hour. We were thinking we would take the bus to Epcot (we are used to taking the bus from Animal Kingdom Lodge when we stay there), but then I had a wonderful idea. Let’s walk to Epcot! Isn’t that why we are staying so close? Besides, the conference. But, how long will that take? We are wasting time. Wait, what is that I see, a boat! You mean, we can take a Friendship Boat to Epcot? Why, of course we can! JOY! We arrived at International Gateway at 2:08 pm. Woo Hoo!

We were meeting our neighbors at Epcot. They had been there since earlier, so we sent a text letting them know we had arrived. We made our way to the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure and picked up a Kimmunicator. First mission – United Kingdom to save Earth from Duff Killigan. This is an excellent activity for kids! Our DD(12) even enjoyed this. The mission lasted about 40 minutes, I guess the timing would depend on your ability to follow the clues. We completed our first mission and chose to begin the next mission in China. Our neighbors were watching the Acrobats in China at 3:00 pm. We made it to China, by way of Mexico and my Margarita, a little after 3 pm. We also tried the taquitos and got a sprite for the family to wash them down. In China, our littlest neighbor had fallen asleep and was stroller covered with legs and shoes out (too cute!) We completed the mission in China to save the Earth from Monkey Fist and agreed to meet up with our neighbors a little later. DD(12) wanted a turkey leg, so off to Future World we went.

We picked up FASTPASSes for Test Track, got 3 Turkey Legs, a pretzel and a sprite. DH decided he wanted java and a pastry. We had to return to Test Track between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm and it was only just after 4:30 pm. We headed to Innoventions for The Great Piggy Bank Adventure. We had 2 teams – DD(12) and DH on one and DD(8), DS and I on the other. We only made it to the first task, when DD(8) had to go to the Restroom. I dropped DS off with the other team so he wouldn’t miss the game and took DD(8) to the restroom. Well, when we returned we had to start all over. But, our new team of 2 had fun! We saved for our Ultimate Vacation. DH, DD(12) and DS were waiting for us at the end. They let us know that soon after we dropped DS off, he too, needed to go to the restroom, so they didn’t get to finish. Now, I asked DS if he needed to go before I dropped him off, and he said no. But, what 4 year old would want to stop having fun to go potty. I should have known better. We offered to wait for them to redo the game, but DD(12) was over it, so we headed over to The Land. We love Living with the Land (no wait). We had time to ride The Seas with Nemo & Friends (no wait) and Journey into Imagination with Figment (no wait), before heading to Test Track. DS and I shopped while DH, DD(12) and DD(8) rode Test Track. DS began his Christmas Wish List for Santa in MouseGear. Once we were finished shopping, DD(12) and DD(8) got a few things as well, we headed back to World Showcase to meet in Germany for dinner with our neighbors.

DH says that he is going to buy a stein every time we are in Germany and every time he can’t find the one he wants and leaves empty handed. Well, not this time! I was determined to buy him a stein, whether he likes it our not! But, no way, he didn’t find one he liked and no one could encourage him to “just buy one”. He is such a penny pincher sometimes. DD(12) decided that she didn’t want a Bratwurst, “we can have a Brat at home!”, she declared. So, we said farewell for the evening to our neighbors and let them know we would call tomorrow when we arrived at the Magic Kingdom :). DD(8) wanted to complete another mission, but the Kimmunicator would not work. It kept saying to return it to China, were we had completed the last mission. We checked the map for the nearest Kim Possible station and it was in Italy. When we found the station, it was closed. I explained to DD(8) that all the missions had ended for the evening, so we needed to find a CM to return the Kimmunicator. No such luck, the CMs were not knowledgeable about the Kim Possible missions (at least the few we ran came across). So, we had no choice, but to return to China and truly “complete the mission”. DD(8) was happy to place the Kimmunicator in the “secret location”. A happy ending, afterall. We stayed in China and ate dinner at the Nine Dragons. A special treat – window view of IllumiNations! :-D A Magical Meal and delicious, too! http://allears.net/menu/menu_9dd.htm and http://allears.net/menu/men_9dk.htm
We stopped by Japan, Morocco and France on the way to International Gateway. We caught the Friendship Boat back to the resort. We stopped for hot cocoa from the Boardwalk Bakery and were tucked in by 11:30pm. Night Night.

Plan: Breakfast at Boardwalk Bakery, Downtown Disney, Lunch at Paradiso 37, Magic Kingdom (The Pirate’s League and Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee), Dinner at The Plaza Restaurant

Actual: I was up and out by 8:00 am for my conference. The kids and DH were exhausted after yesterday, so we ate at Boardwalk Bakery about 10:30 am. Pastries, OJ and Chocolate milk. We decided to rent a surrey bike for $22 per ½ hour and cruise Boardwalk and Yacht & Beach Club. Very fun! We were not going to make it to Downtown Disney in time for lunch at Paradiso 37, so we decided to catch the bus and wing it. We had not eaten at EARL OF SANDWICH before, so we thought we would give it a try. Very busy! And now we know why, EXCELLENT! Everyone was happy with their sandwich choice: DH – Tuna Melt, me – Earl’s Club, DD(12) – Hawaiian BBQ, DD(8) – Best BLT, and DS – PB&J. We even enjoyed the chips and fruit cups. I loved the Lemonade (with Iced Tea), but everyone else added sugar or Equal to it and just thought it was “okay”. http://allears.net/menu/menu_eofs.htm We did some quick shopping at Disney’s Pin Traders and bought pins galore. Even DH bought a lanyard and started his pin collection with a Mickey Cubs pin and Disney Wide World of Sports pin. 

We caught the bus to the Contemporary Resort to catch the monorail to Magic Kingdom. We were in the park by 2:03 pm. We received a text from our neighbors that they had headed back to their resort for some R&R and would meet us later. I had surprises for the kids, The Pirates League for First Mate packages for all THREE children. You could only imagine my delight to find out last week that DVC members received a 50% discount for a limited time only. Yes, we had reservations during our trip and the “limited time”, ROCK ON! The kids were surprised when we walked briskly through Main Street, U.S.A. and straight to Adventureland. Our tradition has always been to start with Fantasyland. When we arrived and I told the CM that we were there for Pirates League reservations, their faces lit up! Even, DD(12) was excited to learn that she would be pampered and transformed into an Empress. Of course, DS chose the “Cursed Pirate” package. It was wonderful to watch them get made up. DH and I were on Cloud 9. A successful surprise! A MUST DO event for all. The CMs were in full Pirate’s costume and even spoke like pirates. It was well worth every penny!

We spent our time before dinner at The Plaza Restaurant gathering FASTPASSes and riding attractions. Dinner was very good! DD(12) wanted a Strawberry shake, so the kids got Strawberry shakes (you know how that is) and she was thrilled. She said she now understood why we needed Advanced Dining Reservations for The Plaza Restaurant, “the shakes are so good”. :-D The fries deserve an honorable mention, so delicious. http://allears.net/menu/menu_pr.htm and http://allears.net/menu/men_prk.htm

We met up with our neighbors after dinner and high-tailing it to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin for fast passes. We were just in time for WishesTM. Fun! More fun with neighbors. DS decided that he didn’t want to ride the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (he was afraid) and no one could change his mind, so we shopped will everyone rode. We did the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and DS saw the “glimpse” of the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and begged to go on. Well, we had the 2 FASTPASSes left and they had not expired, so DH and DS went. We sent the girls ahead for ice cream with our neighbors and agreed to meet at Mad Tea Party. The girls enjoyed the ride and we went to Fantasyland. I must admit this is my favorite part of the entire park. The classics. We rode several rides and our neighbors bid us farewell. We rode It’s a Small World, my favorite ride in the entire park, and I begged to ride again, but no such luck. We made it to The Hall of Presidents for the 11:00 pm show and closed Magic Kingdom down. Are we crazy or what?!? I love that the stores on Main Street, U.S.A. will not kick you out – they allow you to make your final day’s purchases in happiness.

We caught the bus to our resort and got ready for bed. I had mentioned to DH that I wanted a “Mom” necklace in celebration of my Mom’s panel position. We agreed that I should wait until our return trip in 2010, after training. To my surprise, I went to wash my face and on my night case – the “Mom” necklace. I screamed! :yay: He got me! I was in the HAPPIEST place in the World and I was HAPPY! Night Night.

Plan: Breakfast at Kouzzina by Cat Cora, Drive home

Actual: I was up and out by 8:00 am for my conference. We have reservations at Kouzzina by Cat Cora and we were on time, despite the fact that DH would shower after breakfast. Ha Ha! The atmosphere at Kouzzina is very warm. http://allears.net/menu/menu_kouzb.htm http://allears.net/menu/menu_kouzkb.htm
We enjoyed our food. DD(12) raved about the potatoes. I had never had Sweet Potato Hash before, tasty! We were drawing out breakfast even longer than normal, because we didn’t want to leave! DH ran up to the room for a quick shower before our 11:00 am check out. The kids and I shopped a little, got snacks for the drive home, and walked very S L O W L Y to the room. We called for help with our bags and for the car at 10:59 am. Again, we really hate this part, the leaving part. :sad1:

We were on the road to home by 11:30 am. We kept running into people that had just left Disney at gas station and food stops. Very fun! We learned where they had stayed and for how long, what parks they had visited and how many trips they had been on. It was great to know so many Disney fans enjoy the long drive like we do. ~
