Disney's Summer Of The Monkeys

I found a Disney movie that was released on video directly in 1998 called Summer Of The Monkeys and it's about a boy who wants desperately to buy his own pony but has no money until monkeys show up lost and the boy tries to return the monkeys so he can get the money to finally buy his pony. The movie starred the late Wilford Brimley and is based on the book of the same name. Was Summer Of The Monkeys one of Disney's least known live-action films in 1998 and how come it wasn't in theaters?
