Aloha and welcome to the spring 2015 edition of the Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort Information Thread!

In 1971, along with the Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort opened as one of Walt Disney World’s first on-site hotels.

Located on the monorail loop directly across the Seven Sea’s Lagoon from the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has gone through two major expansions since its opening. The first was in 1978 with another in 1985. At that time the name changed to Disney’s Polynesian Resort.

Beginning in 2014 and continuing into 2015 Disney’s Polynesian Resort began undergoing many new changes with several major refurbishments, including the lobby of the Great Ceremonial House and the Nanea volcano pool as well as the addition of Disney’s Vacation Club to the property. The Polynesian also reverted back to its original name.

The goal of this thread is to answer any questions that you may have about Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. Detailed information is provided in the first several posts, along with photos of the resort. As they become available the thread photos will continue to be updated to reflect the ongoing changes to the Polynesian as they are completed.

Upon arrival at the resort you will be greeted by the Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort`s welcome sign, featuring lush tropical landscaping, a waterfall and tiki torches. This sign is located near the entrance’s security booth.

Monorails glide overhead as you arrive at the front entrance of the Polynesian Village’s Great Ceremonial House.

Bell services are available here to assist you with your baggage. You will then be directed either inside to the main lobby check-in desk or escorted by a cast member directly to the Hawaii longhouse for those guests staying club level (more information on club level can be found in post #6 )

The centrally located Great Ceremonial House is the center of activity for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Here you will find the lobby, guest services, concierge services, the resort’s monorail platform, DVC sales information, shops and restaurants.









In late 2014 the lobby of the Great Ceremonial House underwent a major make over, the most notable change being the removal of the central, and beloved, waterfall rock feature.

The new lobby is has an open and bright design, featuring several sitting areas, a small rock water feature topped with the charming Maui tiki and is highlighted by a view through the expansive back windows to the Seven Seas Lagoon and the Cinderella Castle off in the distance.

The Polynesian Village Resort’s guestrooms are located in eight longhouses, with Disney Vacation Club guests accommodated in three additional longhouses and 20 bungalows (more information on the Polynesian Village Villas and Bungalows can be found in post 14)

The resort longhouses are scattered amongst the Polynesian’s lush tropical landscaping along torch-lit pathways with themed music playing softly in the background.



Standard rooms are found in Rarotonga, Niue, Samoa, Aotearoa, Figi and Tuvalu. Club level rooms are located in Hawaii Longhouse and suites in Tonga.

Standard (non-club level) rooms can be booked in four different categories:

Standard view: with views of the gardens, parking lot or monorail

Pool & Marina view: with views of the Lava Pool, Oasis Pool, or marina





Lagoon view: with views of the Seven Seas Lagoon



Theme park view: with views of the Magic Kingdom and Seven Seas Lagoon



(the main difference between Lagoon view and Theme park view is the latter provides an unobstructed view of the Cinderella castle)

Club level rooms are available with garden, lagoon or theme park view.

With the resort (non DVC) longhouses, patios and balconies are only available on first and third floor. Rooms located on the second floor of each longhouse do not feature balconies, but rather a sliding door with a railing that does not allow outside access.









Aotearoa
Sitting the furthest west on the Polynesian Resort grounds by Luau Cove, Aotearoa offers views of the resort grounds and the Seven Seas Lagoon to the North. Guest rooms on the south side of the longhouse overlook the resort gardens, with several featuring a view of the monorail. Aotearoa is a short walk to the Great Ceremonial House and is one of the longhouses closest to the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Aotearoa is the furthest building from the Transportation and Ticket Center. There is a rarely used beach just to the north of the building that provides a nice spot for quiet relaxation.

Fiji
Sitting north of Aotearoa, and to the east of Luau Cove, Fiji offers convenience of location and great views. The eastern side of the building sits along the marina and features views of the marina, some limited views of the lagoon and Contemporary Resort, and the back side of the Lava Pool. The western side of the building faces Luau Cove and the quiet western Polynesian beach. Fiji is close to the Great Ceremonial House, one of the closet buildings to the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, but one of the furthest from the Transportation and Ticket Center.

Hawaii
All rooms in the Hawaii Longhouse belong to the King Kamehameha Club and offer all of the amenities detailed in post 7. Hawaii sits on the main Polynesian beach of the Seven Seas Lagoon and is convenient to the beach, both the Lava and Oasis pools and the marina.

Niue
Niue is the smallest of the Polynesian Village's longhouses and is nestled in between Samoa to the north and Rarotonga to the south. Niue is very close to the Great Ceremonial House and the Oasis Pool and convenient to the marina and Lava Pool. Niue is the only longhouse on the property without an elevator and is only two stories tall. Guests can access the 2nd floor via the elevator in Rarotonga with a short walk across the bridge between buildings or via the stairs in Niue.

Rarotonga
On the south end of the resort, between the monorail and Oasis Pool sits Rarotonga. Rarotonga is directly beside the Great Ceremonial House and Oasis Pool, and is close to the bus stop and Lilo’s Playhouse childcare center.

Samoa
Sitting between Niue and Hawaii, the Lava and Oasis Pools, Samoa is one of the most popular longhouses at the Polynesian Village Resort. Guest rooms face either of the two pools. Samoa is also just a short walk to the Great Ceremonial House.

Tuvalu
Tuvalu is located on the water’s edge to the west of the marina, with just a narrow strip of garden between the longhouse and the Seven Seas Lagoon. Tuvalu is convenient to Luau Cove, a quiet beach to its west, the marina and the Great Ceremonial House.

The Tonga Suites are located beside the Great Ceremonial House at the end of the marina. The longhouse contains six suites that enjoy the benefits of club level service.

While the only food offerings in the Tonga building are continental breakfast and afternoon snacks and beverages, Tonga guests are welcome to use the lounge in the Hawaii building. Most suites have a kitchen area, sitting area, separate bedroom and bathroom.

The Honeymoon Suite is a slightly oversized standard room with a king sized bed and a whirlpool tub. This suite offers a marina and Seven Seas Lagoon view.

The King Kamehameha Suite has two bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, a parlor and a kitchen. The suite covers two floors with the main living area on the first floor and the bedrooms on the second. The upstairs master bedroom offers a balcony and king size bed and a whirlpool tub. The second bedroom has two queen beds and a bathroom with double sinks and separate shower and tub. A suite length balcony faces the marina and the Seven Seas Lagoon.

The Ambassador Suites have two bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a king sized bed, three bathrooms and a parlor area. There are two Ambassador Suites, one each on the first and second floors.

The Princess Suites have one or two bedrooms, each with two queen beds. Each bedroom has a separate bathroom with double sink vanity, bathtub and separate shower. This suite also includes a wet bar. The One Bedroom Princess Suite has one bedroom with two queen beds.

For those who would like a little more personal service in their Polynesian Village Resort stay the King Kamehameha Club provides guests with Club Level Concierge amenities.

Club level rooms are located in the Hawaii longhouse and the Tonga Suites (described in more detail in post 6), both of which feature secured guest-only entry. Nightly turn down service is also provided in these buildings (turn down service may be provided upon request in other Polynesian Village rooms).

Club Level services include pre-arrival personal vacation planning by the Itinerary Planning Office (IPO). The IPO will make your advance dining reservations, assist in purchasing tickets, booking tours or excursions and other advance planning details. Before your 180 day (from arrival) booking window arrives club level guest should receive an email from the IPO office with a questionnaire to assist with planning your stay. Upon arrival at the Polynesian Village King Kamehameha Club guests will be escorted directly to the Hawaii longhouse for club level check-in.



Club level guests also enjoy full access to the King Kamehameha Club lounge, located on the second floor of the Hawaii longhouse, with additional seating on the third floor. The lounge features two-storey high windows providing beautiful views of the Seven Seas Lagoon, Magic Kingdom and Wishes fireworks.



A variety of food and beverage offerings can be found in the lounge throughout the day:

Kakahiaka (morning service) 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. offering muffins and pastries, tropical fruit, cold and hot cereal milk, orange juice, pineapple guava juice, ice tea, coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and water. Yogurt is available as well as other items by request. Please ask at the counter.

Auinala (afternoon service) 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. offering fruit juice, bottled water, soda, ice tea, cookies, tropical fruit, and small snack items such as gummy bears, yogurt covered pretzels and fish crackers.

Ahiahi (evening service) 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. offering finger foods with different themes each day.

Aumoe (late evening service) 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. offering beer, wine and cheese as well as cordials, desserts and the club lounge favorite Ku’ulei Special punch.

Sodas and water are usually available 24 hours. A selection of beer and wine is also available by request.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort provides visitors and guests with a wide variety of dining options, from grab and go to sit-down family dinners. With the exception of the Spirit of the Aloha dinner show (see post 9 for more information) all of the Polynesian’s dining establishments can be found in the Great Ceremonial House.

CAPTAIN COOK'S



Captain Cook’s is a counter service restaurant located on the first floor of the Great Ceremonial House, featuring a grill and grab-and-go options. There is inside and outdoor seating available.

The breakfast menu includes a generous platter plate, Mickey waffles and the famous Tonga toast (see the link below for full menu selections).

Flatbreads, curried meatballs, pulled pork nachos, salads and sandwiches are featured on the lunch and dinner menus.

Grab-and-go offerings include bakery goods, fruit cups, sandwiches, sushi, ice cream (including Mickey bars!), cereal, chips, juices, beer and wine.

PINEAPPLE LANAI



Located on the outside of the Great Ceremonial House next to Captain Cook’s is the new Pineapple Lanai, home of the legendary Dole Whip frozen treat. Traditional, vanilla, twist and float-style Dole Whips are served at the Lanai in either cups or souvenir tiki bowls.

Guests may sit and enjoy their soft serve treats in the covered seating area.

Hours are daily from 12:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

TRADER SAM'S

Opened in March 2015 and tucked in to the west of Captain Cook’s is the new Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto (in the location of the old arcade). Trader Sam’s has an intimate indoor area with seating for 50 guests as well as a patio that can accommodate 80. The menu features beverages, specialty cocktails, many in souvenir drink vessels, and light eats, such as fried dumplings, lettuce cups, sushi, and pork tacos.




Trader Sam’s is open daily from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, with the lounge being restricted to patrons aged 21 and older after 8:00 p.m.

'OHANA

Located on the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House is ‘Ohana, one of the Polynesian’s two table service restaurants. ‘Ohana is open for breakfast and dinner.

The morning offering features the Best Friends Breakfast, character dining with Lilo, Stitch, Mickey and Pluto. Breakfast is served family style with fresh fruit, breads and generous skillets brimming with scrambled eggs, Mickey waffles, island-style fried potatoes, sausage and bacon.

Breakfast is served from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Dinner at ‘Ohana is a favorite feast of many Walt Disney World guests. This meal is also served family style and features fresh pineapple welcome bread, salad, chicken wings, lo mien noodles, fried dumplings, broccoli and oak fire grilled meat skewers – currently steak, chicken and shrimp. While dinner is delicious, make sure you save room for dessert, bread pudding served with vanilla bean ice cream and bananas-caramel sauce!



Dinner at ‘Ohana is not a character meal, and is served from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

TAMBU LOUNGE

The Tambu Lounge is adjacent to ‘Ohana and features beverages, tropical cocktails and an appetizer menu.


The Tambu Lounge is open daily from 1:00 p.m. to midnight.

KONA CAFE

Serving an à la carte menu of Asian-American fusion cuisine, Kona Café, located on the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.



Breakfast at Kona is famous for the legendary Tonga toast. Other popular items include macadamia-pineapple pancakes and the Big Kahuna platter. The full menu can be found here:

The Kona lunch menu offers light meals including a variety of tacos, burgers, salads, and noodle dishes. There is also a wonderful selection of sumptuous desserts, Hawaiian beers and tropical cocktails.

Dinner service at Kona provides a fuller menu and also includes an onstage sushi bar. Aside from sushi, entrées include steak, seafood, noodle dishes, chicken and chops.

KONA ISLAND

Kona Island, located just outside of the Kona Café, is a counter sales location serving coffee and pastries in the morning; sushi, sashimi, wine, beer and cocktails in the evening.

Evening offerings are available from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show is all-you-care-to-eat served family style in the Polynesian Village Resort’s open air theatre (seating areas are covered) situated in Luau Cove at the west end of the resort.



Enjoy a feast of salad, pineapple bread, pulled pork, BBQ ribs, roast chicken and a vegetable medley followed by warm pineapple bread pudding with caramel sauce.

There is a children’s menu offered as well.

During your feast you will be entertained with a luau-style show featuring exciting Polynesian dancers, drummers and a fire-knife performer.

The Spirit of Aloha is on stage Tuesday through Saturday evenings with seating times at 5:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Because of the open air theatre the show may be cancelled in the event of extreme inclement weather.

There are three tiers of seating available, with payment required at the time of booking, taxes and gratuity included.



The Spirit of Aloha is wheelchair accessible and can provide sign language interpretation with 14 days’ notice.

MARINA

Given its location on the Seven Seas Lagoon it is no surprise that boating plays an important part in the Polynesian Village Resort’s recreation activities.

In the center of the resort, to the west of the Great Ceremonial House, you will find the Polynesian’s Seven Seas Marina. Here rentals are available for Sea Raycers, 17’ Boston Whaler Montauks, and 21’ Sun Tracker Pontoon boats. Specialty cruises and fishing excursions are available for booking as well.



The marina also has life jackets that can be borrowed for free, for the length of stay, for young guests to use in the resort’s pools.

EVENING ACTIVITIES

Campfire

Every evening at 6:30 resort recreation staff hosts a campfire on the beach, complete with marshmallow toasting.

Movies

At 8:00 p.m. enjoy a movie under the stars on the lawn adjacent to the Great Ceremonial House. A different film is featured each night of the week. The schedule for your stay can be found in the recreation calendar included in the resort check-in package.



Electrical Water Pageant

Since its debut in October 1971 the Electrical Water Pageant has been making the rounds of the Seven Seas Lagoon entertaining guests with its delightful animal “floats” and memorable music. The water parade stops at all of the lagoon resorts, starting with the Polynesian Village at 9:00 p.m. every night.



Fireworks

An ideal view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks can be had every night from the Polynesian Village beach. Hours vary. Check the Magic Kingdom time’s guide for the fireworks schedule.



POLYNESIAN CULTURE
Hula Dance Lessons

Celebrate the spirit of the Polynesian Village Resort by joining in with the hula lessons featured at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday in the lobby of the Great Ceremonial House.

Polynesian Culture Shows

Every third Saturday of the month enjoy a display of Polynesian culture as a variety of dance groups and musicians join together in the lobby to entertain visitors and resort guests.



FITNESS

While the Polynesian Village Resort does not have its own fitness facility, guests are welcome with free access at the fitness centre at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.



POOLS

The Polynesian Village Resort features two pools for guests’ enjoyment, the Lava and Oasis pools.

The Lava Pool

The newly reimagined Lava Pool opened at the beginning of April 2015. Situated next to the main beach, the Lava pool provides a wonderful view of the Seven Seas Lagoon with Cinderella’s castle rising off in the distance. The beach end of the pool provides a zero entry, flush to the ground and gently sloping into the water. Highlights of the Lava Pool include a new hot tub, waterfall and 142 foot tubular water slide.



Pool access is now limited to Polynesian Village Resort and DVC guests with Magicband entry.
Adjacent to the Lava Pool younger guests will enjoy the new Kiki Tiki’s Splash Play area featuring a small water slide of its own.



Guests seeking refreshments can find what they need at either the onsite Barefoot Pool Bar or nearby at Captain Cook’s and the Pineapple Lanai (for further information see the above restaurant post).

Every afternoon resort recreation staff entertains guests with music and pool games.

Pool hours may vary seasonally. Check the recreation guide for times.


The Oasis Pool

Nestled between the Samoa, Rarotonga, Hawaii and Tokelau longhouses guests will find the quieter Oasis Pool. This pool features a bar and grill with a covered eating area as well as pool-side beverage and food service. A refillable mug station is located on the side of the bar/grill building. There are also three cabana-type shade structures available for rental to guests by calling the WDW reservation center. A half day rental is $25, with a fee of $40 for a full day.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort offers a number of services that help your vacation run as smoothly as possible.

Airline Check-in

For your convenience the Polynesian offers resort airline check-in. If you are flying on one of the following participating airlines you may check your baggage, check-in with your carrier and receive your boarding passes before returning to Orlando International Airport:

You will be provided with a telephone number to pay any applicable baggage fees before bringing your baggage to the airline check-in area in the port cochere. Please note you must check-in no less than three hours before your flight.

The resort airline check-in desk is open daily until 1:30 pm.


Disney’s Magical Express

There is a bus stop for Disney’s Magical Express pick-up and drop-off in the port cochere, across from the main entrance to the Great Ceremonial House.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by a cast member and escorted to the appropriate check-in area.



Childcare

Lilo’s Playhouse, located at the east end of the resort is a supervised childcare center for toilet trained children from the ages of 3 to 12. Children are be able to partake in a number of activities such as crafts, games and watching movies. Dinner and a late night snack are provided. Advanced reservations can be made up to 180 days from arrival and are recommended.

Luggage Assistance

Bell Services cast members are available in the port cochere near the Great Ceremonial House entrance if you require help with your baggage upon arrival. For further assistance with your baggage you may approach the desk in the lobby or contact Bell Services directly from your room.

While waiting for your room to be ready or after check-out Bell Services is happy to store your baggage until you are ready to depart.


Internet Service

Complimentary high speed internet service is available resort wide.


Laundry and Dry Cleaning

Bag for laundry service and a price list are located in the room closets. If you prefer to take care of your own laundry needs there is a small laundromat located on the east side of the resort beside Lilo’s Playhouse.



There are several washing machines, dryers and a detergent vending machine. There is a lounge area to sit while you are waiting, equipped with a television and soda machine.







Please note while the dryers operate with coins or credit/debit card pay, the washing machines appear to only operate on credit/debit card pay. A machine for payment is located beside the detergent vending machine.



Mail

Mail drop-off or information on shipping is available at the concierge desk or at the Hawaii Concierge desk for guests staying club level. Stamps are available from Boutiki or Moana Mercantile.

The Polynesian Village resort offers a number of shopping options for visitors and guests.

BOUTIKI



Located on the main floor of the Great Ceremonial House, Boutiki carries a wide variety of merchandise including men’s and women’s clothing, jewellery, dishware, and giftware, with many resort specific items.








MOANA MERCANTILE



Moana Merchantile is found on the second level of the Great Ceremonial House. The store is divided into two sections. The first section features children’s clothing, toys and souvenir items geared more towards the younger crowd. The other side of the shop is a small convenience store where a variety of grocery items can be found along with beer and spirits, and pharmacy items (over the counter medications, toiletries, first aid items, etc).

Guests of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort have several transportation options available.

Monorail

From the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House guests can access the resort monorail with stops at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, The Magic Kingdom, The Contemporary Resort and the Ticket and Transportation Center.





Boat Launch

From the dock to the east of the marina guests can take a water launch, traveling in a circular route between the Polynesian Resort, Magic Kingdom and Grand Floridian Resort. These small boats offer a relaxing and breezy tour of the Seven Seas Lagoon on the way to your destination.



Bus

The resort bus stop is situated out the front entrance of the Great Ceremonial House and to the east. Buses to the theme parks as well as Downtown Disney, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach pick up from this location.



Ticket and Transportation Center

The Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC) is approximately a ten minute walk to the east of the Polynesian Village (or you can ride the resort monorail if you prefer to relax and just enjoy the ride). There are pathways and signs on the east side of the resort directing guests in the right direction.

From the TTC visitors can take a monorail to Epcot, the express monorail to the Magic Kingdom, a ferry boat to the Magic Kingdom or a bus to anywhere on site, including any Disney World resort, all of the parks, water parks or Downtown Disney.

On April 1, 2015 the Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows welcomed their first guests.

The newest Disney Vacation Club property consists of three longhouses featuring deluxe studio accommodations and 20 two bedroom Bora Bora Bungalows.

Deluxe Studios

Deluxe studio rooms, which are just under 450 square feet in size, are located in the Moorea, Pago Pago and Tokelau longhouses. All of these locations offer standard view rooms with lake view studios also available in Moorea.

Deluxe studios can accommodate up to five adults and feature a queen-sized bed, a queen-sized sleeper sofa and a twin-sized pull down bed. Each studio also contains a kitchenette (microwave, sink, small fridge, coffee maker and toaster) and a split design bathroom, with a sink and shower in one room and a sink, toilet and tub in the other.

There is a small laundry room located in the Moorea longhouse for use of DVC villa guests.

Bora Bora Bungalows

The first of their kind for a DVC property the Polynesian’s Bora Bora Bungalows are an oasis of luxury accommodation rising over the Seven Seas Lagoon. Connected by a series of boardwalks with a secured entry gate, the Bora Bora Bungalows provide guests with stand-alone two bedroom vacation cottages. Each bungalow features a private deck offering beautiful views of the Seven Seas Lagoon, Magic Kingdom and nightly fireworks. Guests may enjoy the sights from one of the luxurious lounge chairs provided or perhaps the bungalow’s own exclusive plunge pool.

Inside, the 1650 square foot bungalows offer guests a full eat-in kitchen, living room, laundry, master bedroom with king-sized bed, second bedroom with queen-sized and twin pull-down beds, and two full bathrooms, one of which features the split design, with separate water closet. Addition pull-out sleeping is provided in the living room with a full bungalow sleeping capacity of 8.
