We have never flown into Orlando International, only Sanford since our son was wheelchair bound. can anyone tell me how they get on with the luggage etc .
I know you have to pick it up then put it onto another carousel. with our luggage plus pushing the wheelchair I doubt we would manage

would apprecaite any info from getting off the plane to getting on disneys magical express bus to the resort

Well, I'm confused. How did you manage your luggage and the wheelchair in Sanford?

Somebody with MCO Customs experience will have to answer your specific questions, e.g. layout, convenience, etc., but I would think the after-Customs conveyor belt in question is right there.

How many people are traveling? Could one person handle the wheelchair while the others handle the luggage?

we managed in Sanford because you pick up the luggage then straight out to the car hire whereas Orlando I heard you have to pick up your luggage take it somewhere else to another carousel and put it back on. now there might be carts but I don't know the proceedure at Orlando hence me wanting some info before we booked an airline that flys into there rather than Sanford.

there would be 3 but as our son cannot move at all really there is just the 2 of us that are able

Hopefully someone with international experience at Orlando airport can help you out. I do know for non-international flights, there are carts and also skycaps available to help with transporting the luggage.

Here are some links that should be helpful:
Orlando airport website
Orlando - specific page about access for people with disabilities
Orlando - specific page about arrivals
Orlando - specific page about departures
Orlando - terminal maps and layouts; You can find DME on the Terminal Layout map, one Level One, look for the letter "S"

I'm going to make a new entry to the disABILITIES FAQs thread with this information, so if you can't find this thread, it will be there.

Okay, I can easily be wrong, but I get the impression that the conveyor belt in question is very convenient to Customs. This is from one of the sites Sue provided "International Only: After clearing Immigration and Customs, proceed to the AGT (train) station. Airside 4 (Gates 60-99) now has an escalator directly from Customs to the AGT station. If you do not wish to take your checked baggage with you, you may place your bags on the baggage belt for transfer to the Main Terminal."
Too, I can't be positive - but I'd think you don't need to worry about that escalator. If they have one of those, there will (okay, fine, should) be an elevator nearby.

You can decide to do it just like at Sandford. Which would mean; take your bags with you and take them with you an DME. Personally I wouldn't do that (we actually aren't in december. Last time I flew in through DTW, so nothing of that kind, this time we'll be flying in through Frankfurt). It's more of a hassle to drag the bags along all across MCO, in and out the bus etc.

The belts will be conveniently placed as far as I've been told by mutiple MCo employees. If you can manage pushing the chair + taking the bagage at Sanford, you'll surely manage pushing the chair, clearing customs and putting the bags back on the next belt.

If you really worry; ask for airport assistance. I normally don't for the arriving airport if I don't travel alone but for MCO we will. It's great peace of mind to have a couple of hands extra to help push the chair and who'll know the airport very well.

I had got the impression that there was more to Orlando Int as in you had to hand ball your luggage to the second carousel hence my worry.

thanks everyone for your replies.

You'll need to clear customs with the bags. If you want DME to take care of the luggage (so you don't have to take it to the bus, but get it conviniantly delivered to the room :) ), you can leave it on a designated belt after clearing customs. DME will take it from there, just as they would if you were to entry the country through another US airport before arriving at MCO.

Just come to think of it; I've done it at DTW. Last flight I transferred flights there. Got the luggage of the belt (well, had airport assistance do that), clear customs and could put the luggage back on a second belt so the airline could get the bags on their way. I didn't see the actual second belt, as the airport assistance guy had taken care of that and returned before I even was cleared myself. I was only wanded and patted down, so the second belt must have been around the corner.

I know it sounds like a real hassle ( I had a worry about it also before realised I've been in much worse situations and never got myself into anything that could'nt be fixed so why worry), but it'll probably be very OK. You're not alone in having to do this and with lots of pax having to do this, I doubt it any airport will want to make it more difficult than has to be.

I don't know if there are any luggagecarts at that point. At DTW there were. But really, if you're worried why not get airport assistance? Maybe you'll find you don't need it; great! If you do run into some situation the helping set of hands will be very welcome. Tip the guy/girl a couple of dollars and you're all happy. :)

thanks again, as you say there is loads of people in the same situation so it must be doable. think its the worry of the unknown

thanks again
