Disneyland Hotel...for driver's only

Having stayed at several Walt Disney World resorts, we took it for granted that the Disneyland Hotel would have 1) transportation to the theme parks and 2) moderately priced dining. Neither one was true.

The young lady at the front desk told us we would have to walk across Downtown Disney to reach the theme parks...a VERY long walk indeed, especially after a day of walking around Disneyland. We were then told that we would have to go back to Downtowy Disney to stand in line for moderate dining or even a dessert. Room service was the most affordable on-site option, but they did not answer our call...probably because all of theother hungry and tired visitors were doing the same thing.

The sad part is the Monorail use to pick you up right by the hotel. We always stay at the Park Place Inn Best Western and it is right across the street from the tram area, I think it is probably closer to the hotel (BW) than the Monorail is to DLH.

Other hotels in the area offer transfers to DL. If you stay on Harbour BLVD there are restuarants in the area but you will still have a bit of a walk.

Welcome to the DIS

We stayed at PP and found that even with the full days walking in the parks it was not that bad a walk at the end compared to walking WDW all week.

We had a car so we ate either inside the parks or went out to the chain style eateries ( love Sizzler).

The mono-rail was running when we were there last year but we mostly walked so we could window shop and whine down from the day.

If you take the Monorail from the park to Downtown Disney, it is not a long walk to the Disneyland Hotel at all and visa versa from the hotel to the Monorail. It is less than half the distance than if you walk the entire length of Downtown Disney to and from the hotel.

As far as the lines for the restaurants for DTD, go by there early or call and make a reservation. Sure cuts the time.

When we stay on property we usually stay at the Disneyland Hotel which isn't a bad distance from the Monorail and all the good food at Downtown Disney. We have on occasion walked out the main gate ate at somewhere like Mimi's Cafe where you get TONS of good food for not too bad a price.
When we stay off property we stay at Homewood Suites and tend to bring most of our own food. You also have to drive to Disneyland from there. Helen

We always stay at the DL hotel when we go. I love the hotel itself and have never had a problem with walking from the hotel to the park. When we don't feel like walking we take the parking trams, you have to go out to the backside of the hotel (over by where it meets up with PP) and you can catch the tram, by the car parking lot. You can take the parking tram to the front of the park and back. Even though you do not have a car, the trams stop fairly close to the hotel. The hotel itself has a quick service restaurant on site much like at WDW... so not sure what you were looking for in cheap food? They have Captains Gallery and Croc's Bit's N Bites.

We love Disneyland, we have stayed at all the DL hotels and prefer the Disneyland hotel. Sorry that your experience was not what you expected, but Disneyland is on such a smaller scale than WDW, resort transportation is not something that is entirely necessary (in my opinion). It was nice when the monorail stoped at DLH, but that was before the Grand Californian was built and you also have to remember that unlike WDW, the monorail at DL is an "attraction within the Magic Kingdom", it is not transportation to and from the park, a park ticket has always been required to use it.

You are kidding, aren't you? If I couldn't walk from DLH to DL, then I wouldn't be able to make it from one end of the AKL to the other either. It is like a city block, at most. I walked farther from the parking lots at WDW to the gate than I did from DLH to the gate of DL.

Did you not go to Croc's? Hamburgers and things like that if I am remembering correctly. ESPN ZONE and Rainforest are just outside the gate area of the DLH. Thse are pretty moderate and maybe 1/16 mile from your hotel room.

I'm not sure what you expected. The walk from the DLH to DL gates is not much more than some people walk from their room to a bus stop at WDW. It is not that bad. And there are TONS of places to eat there, even if there's not many IN the hotel.
