Disneyland 60 - Last Week in August - Give It To Me Straight!

Hello Fellow Disney Nerds:

Okay... I can speculate on the type response that I'm going to get from this question but going to ask it anyway.

This question is directed towards you Disneyland Nerds who know Disneyland as much as if not better than Disneyworld, and to those who have already been to the Disney 60 Celebration.

I want to make it to the Disneyland 60 Celebration but wanted more time to save more money. I have booked for May, but after hearing the final day was around September 5th I am thinking of booking for about four days at the end of August.

I am anticipating a huge crowd but I have resigned myself to deal with the crowd (and an AUGUST crowd at that) rather than rush myself to go in May.

So question is... how mad is it going to be? Will it be insane-WDW- Mad or is Disneyland's madness a tad less chaotic? My common sense dictates that it could be a madhouse for all of us last minute folks trying to make the celebration.

Please advise. Thanks!

PS - I am even thinking about doing it on Sept 1 to the 4th!

End of August is usually a slower time as most area schools are back in session. However, with the 60th close to ending, it's difficult to tell how that would affect crowds. Mid may is usually more preferable temperature and crowd wise, but in the past end of august has not been bad. we went 8/26-8/31 and thought the crowds were fine, especially on weekdays. not as low as when we went in early may, but lower than we thought they would be, and definitely lower than when we went last week.

Wow. Thanks for the input!

Hmmmm, I don't know that the slow times would extend to those dates. in addition to pressing right up against the end of the 60th, that is Labor Day weekend. personally, I'd aim for late august.

Agree with Metalliman on this one...Sept 1 - 4 would be the less desirable option, due to Labor Day Weekend AND the end of the 60th celebration AND Labor Day weekend is a marathon weekend, so it will bring those crowds, as well.
Keep your choice between May and August...and PP's have already outlined their thoughts on both, which I agree with.

OOPS! Okay... scratch that date. Now that I know that.. the last week of August sounds even much better now because others may be looking to vacation labor day weekend.

Yes, didnt know it was LD Weekend. Sticking with the last week of August dates

This may or may not matter, but if you go the last week of August, Haunted Mansion has historically been closed to have the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay installed.

In terms of crowds...it depends on when you say "insane-WDW-mad" what do you mean? When have you been to WDW (Spring Break? Christmas? Summer?)? I only ask because DL is a smaller park (physically) than MK, but it has a lot crammed into it, so it always feels busier to me. It might not be that there are really any more guests, but the walkways tend to feel more congested (on average).

You can get a sense of the events that happened this year in the 2015 Calendar of Events thread and see what is known so far for 2016 (I haven't got a lot in the 2016 thread, but things will be added as I hear about them).

Can I ask, when does the Mansion generally re-open?

Thank you!

At the start of HalloweenTime...these have been the dates for the last few years (when the HM re-opens at HMH):
  • Fri, 09/17/10
  • Fri, 09/16/11
  • Fri, 09/14/12
  • Fri, 09/13/13
  • Fri, 09/12/14
  • Fri, 09/11/15

It opens the first day of the Halloween season. This year that was Friday September 11.

Thank you both very much - that is hugely helpful info. (planning a trip for the third week of Sept. 2016).
