Hi All,
Each trip I have been admiring the cute little wooden drums that are sold at EPCOT in Morocco and Africa, and also Animal Kingdom and would love to buy one as a souvenir but wasn't sure if customs would be too happy about me bringing it home...sooo are they okay to buy and take back into Australia or would I need to declare it?
Thanks in advance!

I think you should declare it - better to declare it then get into trouble. If its ok they will wave you through, no problems, or they will offer to fumigate or similar for you for a fee. I can't remember what the fee was, but it wasn't thousands, I think under $100 but I might be wrong, or if you don't want to pay it you can have it destroyed.

I think because it is coming via the US it will be ok, but declaring is always the way to go. I think I've watched a bit too much Border Security!

Definitely declare it. My Aunt got the third degree and managed to talk her way out of a fine when she forgot she'd bought some wooden bubushka (sp?) dolls from Canada. She was allowed to bring them in no problems just got in trouble for not declaring them. She just totally forgot she even had them.

^^What they said. As long as you declare it, it should probably be fine.

I brought all sorts of wooden stuff in from Asia (fans, parasols, chopsticks, etc.) without any issues. The customs officer was actually decidedly disinterested in the stuff I had to declare...almost to the point of rudeness1 :lmao:

I agree, I always declare just to be on the safe side, I think the only problem you may face is if it is real animal skin for the top of the drums, if they have tags on it saying what its made of and the brand (eg disney etc) that will help as they will know if the skin has been treated. I think they worry more when its stuff that is hand made etc. But definitely declare it so they can check it out.
