From IGN:

Currently hard at work putting the finishing touches to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams’ time in a galaxy far, far away may be set to continue.

A recent scoop from
Latino Review reveals that the filmmaker now stands “a good chance” of returning to helm Star Wars: Episode IX. Four separate sources verified their intel suggesting that Abrams is the studio’s top choice to direct.

Disney execs treated to a screening of his current work-in-progress were reportedly “very happy” with what they saw and are keen for him to commandeer the final instalment in the main trilogy.

No word yet from the studio or Abrams’ own camp on the rumor, but it’s still an exciting prospect considering the filmmaker’s enthusiasm for the franchise.

As it stands, The Force Awakens will open on December 18th, the first standalone movie Star Wars: Rogue One is due December 16, 2016, and Episode XIII is pencilled in for a May 2017 release. With or without Abrams Episode IX is expected to arrive in 2019.

The question is...does he want to do it?

If yes...then it's a sure sign that the now all but completed first movie looks good

Is he doing episode 8?

No, Rian Johnson will be the director for Episode VIII and reportedly will be writing the script. Rumors are the Johnson & Abrams are collboarting on both of scripts for VIII and IX.

I thought when Disney purchased LucasFilm that Lawrence Kasdan (who wrote "Empire") had been tapped to write the scripts for VIII & IX.

I'm gonna take a guess and say that Abrams decided against attempting the second Star Wars because he has Star Trek and didnt feel as though there would be enough time in the schedule...

The reports were that he probably had to be swayed to do ep 7... But as a rabid, lifelong Star Wars nut...

He couldn't possibly turn down the chance to be the savior.

I still hope that his acceptance was based almost entirely on a good script...and not Kathy Kennedy twisting his arm...

Cause that's all that matters...in the end.

A dog poo Lucas type script...and the movie would be sunk.

I think kasdan is acting as a "senior consultant"

To me... That means shadow writer...hopefully a steward that make sure it doesn't suck.

Kinda how...in retrospect...he, Leigh brackett, and Gary Kurtz functioned on the original 3

And dippy dog - Rick mccallum - didnt on the second 3
