Disney Visa/Cruise Deposit

I just got my Disney Visa bill and noticed I had been charged interest for my cruise deposit. I called and asked for clarification. It was explained to me that if one month you charge $1000 for a Disney cruise and the next month you spend $1000 on groceries that if you paid a $1000 it would all go to to the vacation and you would be charged interest on the remaining $1000. The only way to get the 6 months interest free is to not use your Disney Card for any other purchases.

I guess this is how all promotional rates work, but somehow I thought the 6 month free offer was something other than a promotional rate. I am just posting this because I misunderstood the rules and thought someone else might as well.

We didn't understand how it worked, so we called and asked.

Fortunately, since we found out that they can't isolate the Disney reservation payments from the other charges, we simply paid off the whole bill to avoid finance charges.

I'm sorry that you found out the hard way. :(

I find this interesting. I don't have a problem with Disney doing this as long as it is understood up front. However, on other cards like our Best Buy card, we can make an interest free purchase and still use the card for other purchases. When the payment is made it is specified NOT to go towards the promotional purchase. We are still able to have a balance with no interest accrued.

Sbatty,
Like AmyM said we have a Best buy card and just assumed that the Disney Visa would work the same way. We had used our Dvisa and put deposits down for 10 people on our March 2003 cruise for a March 2004 cruise. After returning home we used our Dvisa for a bunch of purchases that we had cash for and then sent the cash in so we could earn extra Ddollars for our next cruise. Well they credited all the extra cash we sent in to the extra charges we had made and not the cruise deposits. So we are paying interest on the deposit. We will be paying off the Dvisa as soon as possible and then will be closing the card. If Best buy can offer a way to seperate purchase then so can Bank one.

On a side note: We had a credit card with a company that sold the business to Bank One. As soon as Bank one took over our credit card they raise our interest rate for no reason. It wasn't a bunch but still they raised it. So Bank One is not a company that we will be doing business with much longer. I hope the Disney will find a better company to represent them. Bank One is NOT a good credit card company. :mad: IMOP But then again is there such a thing a good credit card:confused:

I just posted a question about paying the Cruise deposit with the Dvisa on the budget board. I was curious if you still get the 0% if you are only paying the deposit. And what about if you are using a travel agent rather than going through Disney directly?

I did call Bank One to see if they could clarify my deposit/travel agent question, and the customer service person I talked to was very clear about explaining how the card works. He went into great detail about the fact that if you make any other charges to the card, payments will be applied to the balance with the lowest APR first.

okay here is my DH's take on the Dvisa card.

This is just our opinion::D
His complaint with the Dvisa is the false impression that Bank one gives you about the 0% apr benefit? on Disney vacation purchases. The industry standard is for promotional purchases of 0% apr to stay on the account at 0% apr until the promotional time period has expired. At that time, the ENTIRE balance starts incurring interest charges unless you have had the opportunity to pay on that balance because all of the other purchases have been paid off.
Bank one did not provide any information on how payments would be applied on the web site or in any literature DURING our application process. If people are required to call Bank one and ASK about this issue AFTER receiving the card and made purchases, I think this is false advertising and marketing of a product and should be questioned. :confused:

There only way to NOT get charged any interest when using the Dvisa card through Bank one: use your Dviss for DISNEY vacations and NOTHING else AND pay off the balance in 6 months.

So we can understand exactly how sbatty feels. We have had our card since they first came out and when the 6 months was up we noticed the same thing that sbatty did.

We will be watching to see how many others have the same problem with Bank one. We think it is a bad mark on Disney the way that Bank one is marketing the Disney Visa card.

Lesson learned ::yes::
