How many pins does your child take to the parks to trade? My little one is almost 5..

 Well, I'm 16 and I still consider myself a child. Yes, that's sad. I know. I collect pins but I don't trade them. I think you can take as many as you want and you can trade with Cast Members. :thumbsup2 I love all of my pins and couldn't bear to part with them, though!

OUr girls have a lanyard that are "keepers", and they stay at home. They take about 6-10 pins they like to trade and they trade all trip until they get their "keepers" again. Thats when they are begging for a pack of trading pins again! to keep trading.

DS7 only started trading this summer during our DL trip in June, but he took about 40 to trade when we went to WDW in August. He had NO trouble trading away that many. He's probably got another 50 or so for our Christmas trip. DH and I keep an eye on disneyshopping.com for good deals where the pins average out to anywhere from $2.50 - $3.00 per pin.

His "pin wall" is completely filled, so we finally bought him one of those pin trader bags to keep them in--he's getting it for Christmas.

I bought my dd (5) 10 pins on ebay to trade with this past november.. She traded them all.. And i will buy more for Feb. when we go to HHI.

My nieces (3 and 10) took only the pins they were willing to part with, about 8 or so. It got heavy on the little ones neck so we kept it on her uncle instead ha ha, he looked so funny with a pink strap with all these princess pins on!

DD9 takes about 5 or 6 each time when we go to the parks (we are on Disney property somewhere almost every weekend). We (I) lost her pin bag on the monorail a few months ago that had about 20 pins in it, which I spend FORTUNE replacing on EBAY, since several were pins she really didn't want to trade, so now she limits the number she takes. She does not wear a lanyard - it just gets too heavy and uncomfortable at times, she has a little "folder" purple with Tink on it that has fabric inside to fasten the pins on, it has velcro to close it and a clip so she can put it on a belt loop or whatever.

She is getting to the point where she does not want to trade any of the pins we have, so after XMAS I will be on EBAY again! We have bulletin board full of pins. It's addicting!

It is in no way sad. I am 24 years old and I am still a kid at heart. I always will be too! I just know when to behave. ;)

It's really not sad, we just have more fun than anyone else!!!! :dance3:

OMG - I'm 48 (closer to 49) and I think I have more fun with some of the Disney stuff than DD9 does! I never went to Disney as a child so I'm making up for lost time!

Everyone can be a kid at Disney if they want too or will allow themselves to be! I was playing Toontown Tag in Innoventions on Saturday with the kids because they needed to fill out the game - I was laughing and giggling more than the kids!

I am 36, and I just started getting pins the other day. What do people recommend I do help me start my collection? I know that the one set of pins you want are the cast member pins?

Thank you.

My son started trading when he was in kindergarten. We learned from our mistakes the first time he went to the parks to trade pins. We knew nothing about pins at that time. We bought about 10 pins at the disney store for him to trade. He traded all the pins, including one he particularly liked. During the night, he woke up crying because he missed his lady and the tramp pin. When we got home, the pins were all sold out. Dh ended up buying it on ebay for an outrageous amount. So we learned to buy more pins than we need to take to the park. We also keep the pins he really likes separated from those he doesn't care about.

I think the best way to start a collection, is to collect pins that catch your fancy. If there is a particular character you like the best, try to find pins of that character. I started collecting in 2003 and bought every pin that caught my fancy, it broke the pocket $. So now I only collect sparkly Tink pins.

There are cast member pins (5 different series of them) to collect. These pins a special in the fact that you cannot buy them at Disney. At Disney, they are only attainable by trading with a CM. The easiest ones to spot are the hidden mickey series. These have a small mickey head "hidden" on the pin. These pins don't interest me, but my son thinks they are great.

I agree with the above poster.. When we started collecting for my dd - we bought her pins that meant something to her.. (her first plane flight, first time on Splash mt., fav. princess.. etc).
Now , for the last trip, i bought her some pins (10) on ebay, and we solely traded those (it was actually a lot of CM pins!) - Honestly neither she or I care if they are CM only pins, we just collect what we like. That's the fun of it.. We are not in it for the "value" of the pins. And we only bring her pins to WDW that she can trade, since the black mickey backs on the pins STINK... she leaves her good pins at home on her pin bulliten board. This way - she knows anything on her lanyard, she can trade. It's much easier that way.
Now, i have to admit, i myself, just bought 2 pins on our last trip in Nov.. LOL, so i am slowly deciding how to get into this myself..
It can become an addiction, and can be overwhelming if you try to "do it all". So, like the above poster said, I am thinking i will only be collecting Tink pins - she is my fav. But, i haven't FULLY decided on that issue yet! LOL
Good luck and have fun!!

It is addicting! We just really got into trading this year, although we have been collecting since we moved to Orlando in 2003. Those pins usually were for special occasions, events, etc.

I got hooked when we were in AK with friends and they really explained the CM pins to us - one had a little coffee mug with Mickey that DD traded for (I love coffee) and my friend mentioned that there was a whole set of them and she had gotten them on EBAY, well that got me started! I spent WAY too much money on EBAy for pins this year.

I bought her a lot of about 24 pins to give her a bunch that didn't have any meaning to her to trade, but of course she still wanted to keep some.

Now that DD is really into Chip & Dale - she looks for those pins first and she knows I like Daisy.

We had a a Malificent pin that DD was going to trade with a CM in Once Upon A Toy and she was nice enough to tell DD that it was from Disneyland Paris, and she might want to keep it! We trade only with CMs.

We are getting ready to go to Disney and have never done pin trading before. My plan is to give each child (ages 6 and almost 4) 6 starter pins and give an additional pin that relates to our itinerary in some way as a special gift each morning. By the end of the trip, they'll at least have these 12 pins. I think we also get Magical/Grand Gathering pins at the 2 events we are going to. My theory is that the kids will keep the pins they really like and trade some pins for other pins that they like better. If anyone has any tips for teaching children how to trade pins, I would love to hear them. For example, how do you approach someone about trading? Do you just ask nicely if they would like to trade? Any other tips we need to know?

We don't trade with other guests, only with CMs who are wearing lanyards (or some wear a thing that hangs at their waist. You can't miss them! CMs will always trade with children, and those with a green lanyard only trade with kids. Your child can trade one or two pins with each CM. They will let the child pick what they want and take whatever the child wants to offer as long as it is an official pin.

There are sets of pins that are only available by trading with a CM - they are not for sale anywhere (well except EBAY) - and it is fun to try and collect the whole set.

Sometimes a CM will have a 'surprise' pin that is turned backwards so you can't see it - DD loves to take that pin in trade, and has always been very happy.

My DD9 loves to engage the CMs in conversation while she is trading, and will sometimes ask their opinion on which one they like best, etc.

There are other pin trading events around Disney were pin trading fans gather to trade with each other.

Here is a link with some basic guidelines and etiquette http://eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/page?id=getStarted

It is fun and gets addicting - DD has trouble choosing which pins to trade these days - she likes them all.

Is there a list somewhere for all available pins? Whether or not they have been discontinued or not?

What you do is buy a wack of the cheapest pins you can get and traid up for the nice ones. I mainly went for the rair ones. The kids went for what they liked. I have all 3 of the hitchhiking ghosts from the haunted mansion and many more neat ones. There are some sets we have bought to. I made some shadow boxes with some of our favourites and the rest for now are in a bag.
