Disney donates $10M to Florida Hospital expansion

Florida Hospital started work Wednesday on a $40 million expansion of its children's hospital and announced that Walt Disney World had donated $10 million for the project.

The hospital will be the first hospital to bear the Disney name. The new formal name of the hospital will be announced at a later date.

Florida Hospital had previously raised $7 million toward its goal of $25 million in donations from the community. Scheduled for completion in 2010, the hospital will grow from 155 to 200 pediatric beds. The hospital will offer advanced surgery, oncology, neurosurgery, cardiology, transplant service and full-service pediatrics.

The expansion will take place in four phases:

15,000-square-foot addition to the Florida Children's Hospital lobby that will be designed by Disney, slated for November 2008.

10,000-square-foot dedicated pediatric emergency department, completed by November 2008.

Conversion of Florida Hospital space for use by Florida Children's Hospital, planned for mid 2009.

Neonatal intensive care unit expansion for a total of 80 beds by early 2009.
Walt Disney World is a part of Lake Buena Vista, Fla.-based Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, which is a business segment of Burbank-based Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS).

I, for one, have been an emergency patient at Celebration Health and my physician-friend traveling with me at the time managed to get me discharged, against medical advice, to fly home. He was desperatly uncomfortable with the care I was receiving in the ER.

I spent the next 2 weeks in the hospital and perhaps it was not at all safe for me to leave Celebration Health. The one thing I know for sure....it was not safe for me to REMAIN at Celebration Health.

If you need serious emergency service....go to a facility in the Florida Hospital network.

What does this have to do with the announcement about Disney making a donation for the construction of an addition to the children's hospital?

Nothing to do with one another. "Florida Hospital" is a group of 7 hospitals in ORLANDO working together-one of which happens to be the Florida Children's Hospital.

The hospital in Celebration is not part of the "Florida Hospital" Network.

Glad to see Disney giving back!!!! :thumbsup2

I wonder if the ER will offer FASTPASS!!............

Actually, it is.

The "real" name of the hospital is "Florida Hospital Celebration Health"

Pardon my error about Celebration Health.

I do stand firm on my recommendation to go ANYPLACE else! That's from my personal experience and recommendations from castmember friends in Florida.

As an example.....they have physicians they call for the emergency room if they busy...but are not on staff. The physician they called for me participated in NO health insurance programs. He saw me for 5 minutes and discussed my care with my friend (a radiologist who accompanied me to the hospital and worked with the staff). I received a bill for $640. Can you imagine what would have happened if I had spent 2 weeks THERE instead of my hospital at home?

After meeting "Dr. Creepy Man", my friend changed his mind and began to push hard for me to leave. As a physician, he did not want me to be treated by Dr. Creepy Man.

Dr. Creepy Man and the hospital staff insisted I stay and lied when they told me BC/BS of Maryland would cover none of my ER expenses if I checked out AMA....even after I had personally SPOKEN with BC/BS of Maryland to confirm the coverage.

There was just something not right about the entire experience.

I had pancreatitus.

I checked myself out of that nut-house---spent the night back at our GF room (with some really great drugs!!) and was on the first flight home the next morning. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks at home and was overwhelmed by the difference in the 2 hospitals.

Try them if you like - it's a pretty little community hospital. I would not recommend it, however.

They are really making a contribution, not starting their own hospital.

Disney is actually opening a hospital/clinic for cast members!!! What an awesome company!!

Where did you see that? :confused3

I had a completely opposite experience at Celebration Health/Florida Hospital when I was having chest pains during a vacation a year ago. They were awesome. I could not imagine receiving better care from better people.

I can guarntee you that the hospital at Sand Lake, which is part of Orlando Regional Medical Center system, is no better. I waited 6 hours in their waiting room to see a physician. There were probably 4 other families also waiting. It was not a happy time for me.

I am an ED doc, but have no affiliation with Florida Hospitals - I'm in Philly.

I often hear co-workers say the same thing about your insurance not covering if you go AMA, I never thought it was true, but it is a common statement (threat?) I never liked hearing others say that. I always feel it is my job to give you the information to make an informed decision. But if you want to leave after I give you that info, that's your right.

I will say that the people make the difference (Didn't Walt say that?!?) - Dr. Creepy could be a lousy doc and have a lousy personality. but remember that almost everything bad you are saying seems to revolve around him. Don't blame a whole hospital or system based on one or a couple bad apples.

Hope you are feeling better.

Trust me when I say Dr. Creepy was just the tip of the iceberg - did not want to put everyone to sleep explaining other troubling events during my stay.

There was one physician who spoke with me before Dr. Creepy arrived who allowed me to make my own decision. I asked to speak with him after Dr. Creepy left the room.

Being in a hospital and making a decision when you are terrified should not be made worse because of ER staff. You are right. I had terrible insurance and wanted to know what everything would cost. To tell me my insurance would not cover if I left was the ultimate threat.

Thank God I had my friend Lou with me.

I learned REAL fast that everyone needs an advocate with them in these situations. When you are in pain and terrified, you may not make the best choices --- even if you ARE surrounded by supportive staff.

By the way....I was very happy with the everyone in my local hospital. It was just too easy to compare the two situations.

Anyway.....Dr. Creepy was just one very frightening element of the entire madness.
