I was so excited when I received my Disney Store catalog and saw the new christmas village pieces. I have the entire Disney Parks Village from Dept. 56 and thought this would be a great addition!

I just went online to buy my first piece and saw this warning:

WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm.

WDW Tinker Bell & Cinderella Castle Light-Up Holiday House

All the pieces have the same warning! So there is NO WAY I will get them. Why would TDS sell products with this chemical anyway?

Thanks for posting this. I can't imagine why they would sell this. I saw them in the catalog and they are really cute BUT NOT THAT CUTE!

All retailers who do business in the state of California are required to have this warning posted on specific products. They have these signs all over shops in Disneyland.

Unless you are going to eat it, burn it or alter it in any way, I wouldn't worry about it.

They have that same label on Christmas lights and plastic trees etc sold at Target during the holidays too. I never really gave it a second thought.

Having lived in CA, my take is that these signs are so ubiquitous that there is literally nothing you can do without encountering a "substance known to cause cancer." Thus, for me, the signs are effectively meaningless.

Not only would you have to eat/smoke/otherwise injest it, but probably in quantities to choke a horse.

I don't live in California so would it affect me?;)
Just kidding

In case you didn't realize it, the substance in question is lead in the electrical cords. Lead is found in every electrical cord on every appliance in your home- toaster, coffee maker, lamps and all plug in christmas decorations including strings of lights. The AMA recommends a simple handwashing after touching any cord and just keeping children from touching them and putting their hands in their mouths. There is no reason for major alarm.

I worked enviromental labs for many years and my wife is a enviromental chemist / toxicologist and the Cal. warning is normal, you are more apt to have serious side effects or harm from breathing the air in a lot of Cal. citys then getting harm from a lot of things they put their warning on.

Califonia even has it's own testing procedures that are more complex and yet less appropriate then the E.P.A.s and that is saying alot.

Just my two cents, don't eat it or smoke it and you'll be fine.

PS If you have carpet in your house the odds are that it would have that same label on it if you lived in Cal. along with a great many other things in your house.

We had that same warning outside our hotel in San Diego, it kinda freaked me out until I saw it posted all over the place.

Christmas lights (as to many other things with lead cords) have the same warning.

That's just like when I used to smoke. I bought the packed that said "smoking by pregnant women my cause birth defects". I figured I'm not a pregnant woman. Just Kidding around.

I saw that warning in the catalog also and thought it was a little strange.

Thanks,
Frank:jester:

It's also on the door of every grocery store in CA as you walk in, and tons of other businesses too.
ANY thing that contains certain chemicals (plastic compounds, resins, etc.) will have this warning if sold in Californa.

I've seen this warning in the catalog many, many times. You can always find it whenever the Disney Direct store is selling their door mats (the brownish ones). BTW--if you don't already know and havn't figured out by my post....Disneystore.com is no more, it is now Disneydirect.com. The catalog and online store are now separate from your local Disney Stores. Have not heard if merchandise bought online will be returnable at your local stores. All the info is not out yet and the online store just changed it's name this week.
