Has anyone purchased Disney stock? If so, care to say how the performance has been? An article in the Orlando Sentinel on Nov. 9th stated Disney had record profits for the second year in a row. Was wondering if now would be a good time to buy?

We did.....purchased some for the kids. They each have a certificate to hang on the wall framed..........the certificate is pretty cool which contains the qty of shares owned. Performance wise over the last few years it has done fairly well. But I couldn't tell you where it sell at today....I should check.

Not sure if I can add this in, but check this out if you haven't already...

Purchased many years ago, for DD, advisor asked why we were buying since at the time Dis wasn't do that great in the market. We didn't care it was more for fun so she would own a little Disney (that's before we purchased DVC). Last statement it is doing well and it was a good choice!:goodvibes

DIS closed at $32.02 yesterday and closed today up $0.99 at $33.01.

It was selling at $35 back in the early 90's but has split 3 ways since then (once, around 1998). It stagnated for several years towards the end of Eisner's command and has been slowly/steadily rebounding in the past couple of years.

We purchased Disney stock back in 1993 - just before buying DVC - and have enjoyed watching the ride. Great at times and very frustrating at times. The individual shares are wonderful with an image of Walt and many of the characters on the certificate itself. Beacuse of the artwork, it is reported to be the most widely held stock - with a huge number of stockholders owning a single share , just for the artwork. It was been as high as about $110 before splitting to $35 and as low as about $17 after the 3-way split.

I have owned several shares since 2000. It has been up and down as all stocks have been. It hasnt been a huge money maker for me, but it is a good strong company. I would seek advise from your broker and check out many of the free sites available on the web before just jumping in. Check its financials also. To buy a minimal amount of shares, you will be fine just for the coolness of it. To buy in hopes of making money, prepare for the long haul, maybe 3-5 yrs.

We bought shares back 1998 just after we bought into DVC and seeing how wonderful it was... Also, when everything was looking marvelous in the stock market. I believe we bought at around $38 and then everything crashed. Disney is back to about $33 today so we have a ways to go just to get back to our purchase price.

Keep in mind this happened to virtually every stock. Many collapsed. I had 10,000 shares of WorldCom... gone.

I think DVC as time has gone by has helped stablize Disney and will have an even more calming effect on bottom lines for Disney in the future. For obvious reasons, I don't give stock advice though.

I bought it at $16.12 back in 2002 when DIS was suffering the post 9-11 blues so I've been happy with it. It stagnated for a little while then it started going up. Would I buy it today? I'm not sure. Everything has been so rosy the last few years that I'm thinking they are due for a tumble on the subprime gas price problem... If oil prices stay high enough long enough airfares will rise & car trips will be closer to home (go SIX!). On the other hand even if they do tumble I don't think it'll be all that far...the movies seem to be carrying their share of the load unlike in the past. Not advocating SIX however, they've got bigger problems.

Some fun reading (well, fun for finance geeks) - for folks interested in investing in Disney, or just folks curious about the corporation:

Here's the latest earning summary:

And if you really want to get geeky, here's the latest 10-Q:

Personally, I think you have to have a whoooole lot of money before investing in individual stocks makes sense from an investment standpoint. That said, it can be a fun (and often profitable) hobby.

Thanks for the info!! Jim Cramer on CNBC also picked Disney as a buy last week. Well, don't have a whoooole lot of $$, but I would like to buy some stock and a framed certificate! Yes, I must admit I am a finance nerd!:thumbsup2

Did you buy your stock this way?

don't quote me;) bought DH 1 share a couple of years ago as a Xmas present (because I thought the certificate was :cool1: ).

know that he's bought more, assume it's thru a DRIP system that he typically utilizes...he tells me it's made money for us:thumbsup2

we have some previous stock, but are seriously considering going this route for our next purchase.

Im hoping for it to steadily start its climb back up. Pre 2000's the stock routinely did well and had 3 very good splits between the mid 80's and late 90's

We bought 50 shares 2 or 3 years ago at $23.37.

To quote many DVC fans...

"We only wish we had bought more."

I bought my DVC in the late 90's for around $85 a share. I remember right around the time the Animal Kingdom opened, it was up around $120, and then went down. And then they did the 3 for 1 split. For a while after the split, it seemed to be floating around in the $15 range, but has increased since there.

I love getting the Annual Report each year, and usually read it cover to cover. It's really interesting.

Thanks for the site. So if we give them 1000$ how many shares do we get?

I know its all relative, but was just wondering what a good starting point(as in how many shares) would be for an inital Disney stock purchase?

We have been doing the DRIP program with Disney for many years. The wife accumulated many shares as a CM as Disney matched 1 for 1 on her share purchases.

Currently, they debit your account on the 15th and invest those funds within 6 days. The costs are also very low for the transaction, usually just over a dollar total.

It is amazing how after a few years you may have 100 shares, then 1000 or more. Pretty neat!!!

Obviously Disney (DIS) dabbles in more than just theme parks. Media is another arm of there business; including ESPN, ABC, Pixar, etc. The media arm seems to be a bit more stable than the theme park business as a long term investment. You never know what can happen as far as tourist destinations go.

I wanted to buy some Disney stock, but my advisor said there were better, more reliable ways to invest my money. He noted the reason above for not purchasing the stock.

All this being said it has been performing well lately.

There is a website onestock.com that you can buy a single piece of stock. I have done that for DD and DNs. That way they each own a piece of Disney. I need to buy one this year for the youngest DN. It has gone up over the past few years. I am glad I bought them and they do look great hanging on the wall of the kids' rooms.
