Hi - I'm a elementary school librarian. Every year I do a "theme" for the year - next year I'm thinkin' Disney! I'm not sure how to pull this together with a VERY limited budget, and am open to all ideas!

In the past, for example, I've done a spy theme with secret agent cards, a password, and a "mission impossible" for them to go through.

I really need i.d. cards for the kids and maybe ideas for a reading log or game that will last the kids through the year.

I know you guys will help me out!! :thumbsup2

I have no specific ideas... just nosy and wanting to watch what these creative, budget minded pals come up with! :goodvibes

If you're looking for spy themes, you can do Agent P and Kim Possible. Are you looking for ideas for books to read that are Disney related or is that not a requirement?

Brilliant!!

Walt read to his daughters all the time.

Many of the movies come from books:
Alice in Wonderland
101 Dalmatians
Jungle Book
Mr. Toad
Mary Poppins
Robin Hood
Winnie the Pooh
The Rescuers
Oliver (Twist)
Little Mermaid
Beauty & the Beast
Aladdin
James and the Giant Peach
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hercules
Tarzan

Music teacher here.
I link music and library all the time.
Music and Art - Fantasia!!

I think a Small World theme would be great fun.

Have books in stations for different heritages.
Stories, myths, foods, clothing, music, architecture.

How about a passport for read around the world?
Fill the library with "just like me" paper dolls.
Celebrate diversity.

First Graders here do habitats
Ocean - Little Mermaid & Finding Nemo. Bedknobs and Broomsticks has a great underwater scene.

Forest - Bambi, Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh, Pocahontas

Desert - Aladdin

Jungle - Jungle book

Savannah - Lion King

If I think of more,
I'll be back

I am the biggest Disney fan at the school I teach at! I love this! I teach third grade, and I think the It's a Small World theme is amazing!!
We could read stories and fables from different countries in guided reading. We could read informational text about the countries in social studies. And... Each student could research a particular country and then give a presentation about it. Maybe even including what the typical life of kids in their country.

Thanks for the great ideas - keep 'em coming!

The books they read don't have to be disney, but the themed material like the reading logs I will probably make with Disney clipart.

How about something to do with "If you can dream it, you can do it" and use Walt and all the characters as an inspiration?

Pinterest is an awesome sight for things like this for teachers. You might want to try there as well.

I have ths quote above my lass room library, "There is more treasure in books than in all of the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life."

My kids put a Mickey head up on the wall for every book they read.

Love all of these ideas. I teach world geo and have been hoping to one day do a It's A Small World theme. I also teach ancient civ so my theme kind of needs to encompass both. Hmm...Indiana Jones perhaps.

What about using a MK map and setting it up like a board game. Each book they read gets a roll of the dice. They can advance or have pitfalls. All of these can be themed. You could have random prizes stickers etc.

The logbook can be themed "your magic kingdom adventure".

The nice thing about this is you can use millions of books to incorporate in the various aspects of the park. Railroads, american history, jungle exploration, fantasy, France, the list is endless.

For their final project the could write their own adventure picking two or three books to highlight thematically.

That would be great. We had "amazing race" theme where the classes got points (miles) for what they read (it was accelerated reading points if you have those where you are if not maybe you can google the AR)
Then the raced around the world with those miles, when they reached a designated spot on the map they would have a fun challenge between the classes during recess for more points and as each class got to their destinations they had small class gifts like otter pops etc. The kids love this.

Also you can use the Rick Riordan books for inspirations they are published by Hyperion and Disney owns that. so you could have Greek, Roman and Egyptian themes there.

It really would be fun to have something for the little ones that they would like and also for the older ones, But I help our libriarian quite a bit when I have some time at work and it is a difficult job at times. so it is great that you are thinking of having a fun theme.

You could do a genre theme around the themes of the lands. Fantasy Land with fantasy related genre, wouldn't have to be Disney related stories only, could be Harry Potter, etc. Adventure Land=adventure stories, Frontier Land = Westerns etc. Maybe You could have a park map type layout and each book read from the genre gets a punch for riding a certain ride in that land. Once you've "ridden" the rides you get a Fast Pass to a parade or fireworks (prize).

Disney should have a reading program, with the ability to earn merchandise coupons upon completion, a la Chuck E Cheese's.

I agree Disney should have some kind of prize program for reading - it's not like we don't spend the majority of our paychecks there...toss us a 50 cent Mickey straw! ;)

I started my "Reading Passports" and so far I'm doing an "A-Z Disney Character" theme, starting with Aladdin and ending with Zazu. Every other page has a place for a paragraph book report and the "off" pages have quotes, crossword puzzles, tic-tac-toe, etc.

I love the idea of the Magic Kingdom map! I was also thinking of buying or printing Disney posters and cutting them into squares, like a puzzle. A student gets a square for fininshing a book report, and the class that finishes first gets a prize.

Thanks so much for the help...love the ideas!
