My son was gifted about 50 pins. However, I'm new to this and I just can't figure out how to do the Real VS Fake pin's. I think some of them MAY be real...but I just can't figure it out. Would anyone be willing to help me?

Especially if your son is young (not a teenager trying to get good ones to sell or something) I wouldn't worry about it either. I've never seen anyone give a hard time about them at the parks.

Welcome to pin trading! The concern about real versus scrappers/fake is a common discussion down here on the Collector's board. Sometimes it can pretty easy to tell that a pin is a fake (e.g., a blonde Ariel, Belle's ballgown is green, etc.), but other times the differences are so subtle is nearly impossible to tell. In the end, there is no sure-fire way to tell if a pin is a fake or not. Some people claim that thickness, smoothness/roughness, coloration, pattern on the back, magnetic, sound it makes when tapped, etc. all are all methods of telling fakes from real pins, but they're basically just educated guesses. In the end, as long as you go into pin trading knowing that you'll likely end up with scrappers/fakes in your collection, have fun!

Here are some threads that talked about the basics of pin trading, the issues with scrappers/fakes, and warnings about "professional" traders.
