Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2024 Edition

USD is not weaker compared to 2018/2019. Depends how you want to measure, but at YE 2018, USD/EUR was 1.14, USD/JPY was 109. YE 2019 it was 1.11 and 108, respectively. Today USD/EUR is 1.08 and USD/JPY is 154. CNH was 6.8, 6.9 and 7.15. I don't know the mix of revenues, but on the balance, I would say USD is either neutral or stronger for revenue purposes.
I believe I worded my post poorly. By weaker dollar I mean the purchasing power of $500 million in 2019 is more than 2024. Not that the dollar is weaker than other currencies in the global market.

I was actually booking rooms during that time. I know the prices did not change in unexpected ways between 2004 and 2006.

If you can point me to that disclosure, I'd be interested in reading what it actually says. "We paid for it out of guest spending" is not the same as "we increased the nightly rate enough to cover it."

The expectation was that the additional cost of ME would be re-paid by higher resort spending--but that's not in the room rate, that's in more food, an extra day at WDW rather than sneaking off to Universal, etc. because people were locked into the resort without a rental car. And in the days before ubiquitous ride sharing, that was probably true.

This is also why they added the dining plan and changed the ticketing structure from PH/PHP to Magic Your Way at the same time--all of that was designed to capture as much time, attention, and money as possible from anyone visiting Orlando and Disney.

Brian- I enjoy your posts but what I am saying is what I heard. It was early when the program started I was listing to one of those investor Q and A's. The question was asked how do you justify the cost of ME, the executive at the mic stated that you needed to understand how it works, the cost is passed on to the resorts who when they increase room rates take the expense into consideration when they set room rates. So every year when the room rates are adjusted, a little bit of the adjustment is for what their pro rated charge was for ME. As a DVC owner, I can tell you it was there in our DVC association dues. Do you really think that the cost was directly passed onto DVC members but Not to cash guests?

So why didn’t Dues jump unexpectedly that year? (They didn’t)

I don’t recall seeing ME ever called out separately in a DVC budget. If anything it was folded into transportation. Even then I would expect to see an unexpected jump in that category that year. If you were an owner across 2004-2006 see if you have the detailed budgets.

That cost recovery doesn’t have to come from increased room rates. It can also come from increased food and beverage spend at the resorts and beyond.

It occurred to me that this could have been offset by the ending of valet parking in the DVC budgets, but that ended two or three years later.

Do not want to get arguementative, so we can just agree to disagree. I know what I heard and Disney never walked it back.

A much better option than that lumpia...sorry I found that gross...so much hype.

Totally agree! It wasn't horrible, but I'm one 'n done on the lumpia...
Might have been the first batch of the day..but that cream cheese glob ended up spilling into a pandora drain... maybe undercooked... Mr kemals more than made up for it...

Mine seemed under-done as well. I had a very similar item at Disneyland back in 2019 and it was really excellent, so my expectations were too high I guess.
