History: As Disney celebrates 100 years, a look at its ongoing effects on the desert

Walt & Lilly Disney peruse architect Carl Denny's plans for their second home at Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs.

One hundred years of existence of a company seems a pittance when compared with the longest-lived companies in the world. Remarkably, there are hundreds of companies that are actually hundreds of years old. The oldest continuously operating company in the world is the Japanese construction company, Kongo Gumi, established in 578 AD making it an astonishing 14 centuries old.

This week the Walt Disney Company celebrated 100 years, one century, of existence since its founding on Oct. 16, 1923. The company has had an outsized influence on the world during its existence and interesting and ongoing effects on the desert.

Walt and Roy Disney founded their company from the ashes of a short-lived previous effort without knowing if the new company would fare any better. But they had learned from failure and that would prove auspicious. Disney’s arrival on the desert would be equally important, even transformative.

Disney arrived in the desert in 1936 to play polo on the new field in the center of Palm Springs bounded by Sunrise to the west, Baristo to the north and Ramon to the south. The site would eventually be repurposed for Gene Autry’s baseball stadium.

Disney heard about the desert from Ted Slocum, a Pasadena businessman and horseman, and Frank Bogert, cowboy extraordinaire and tireless promotor of the desert.
Slocum and Bogert camped with Disney during horseback riding expeditions with Los Rancheros Visitadores outside Santa Barbara.

Having known Disney for years, Bogert recounted that Disney and his wife Lilly bought a lot and built a home at Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs, where Slocum lived. The Disney home at Smoke Tree was designed by desert architect William F. Cody. The low-slung house featured an exterior of redwood boards, large glass windows to take in the view, and a simple, heavy shake roof.

Disney settled into the community in earnest. Bogert recalled, “Walt became very active there entertaining the children.” Disney was also invested in entertaining all children in the desert. In a letter to Allen Smith of the then Palm Springs Desert Museum, he wrote, “I have just looked at our picture The Story of the Desert, which I had intended bringing down this week-end, but it still needs additional editing and until this is done I would rather not show it. I know you want to see this picture and I will bring it down for you as soon as it’s in good shape — most likely this will be shortly after the first of the year.”

The movie would end up being title “The Living Desert” and was released in 1953, the first of his “True-Life Adventure” series, earning Disney its first of 29 Oscars for the non-animated series features.

Bogert continued, “He loved lawn bowling (there is a green at Smoke Tree) and …cherished his winning cups as much as his Oscars.” Disney became a fixture at the numerous lawn bowling competitions and sponsored his own event. He was a regular at the many costume parties, breakfast horseback rides, and holiday celebrations at the Ranch.

Palm Springs would play a part in Disney’s progression as a company. Disney animated the short story of “Ferdinand” written by his neighbor at Smoke Tree, Munro Leaf. The short animated film of the story of a peaceful bull who just wants to sit in the shade of a cork tree and smell the flowers was a huge hit for the company.

Donald Gilmore, another neighbor and the head of Upjohn Pharmaceuticals invested in Disneyland, giving the brothers much needed capital when few believed in the possibility success for the theme park.

While taking golf lessons to the west of the Ranch, Disney learned the course was considering adding a water feature into the lake between holes No. 9 and 18. Disney would gift the club a monumental copper lotus water fountain shortly after. The prodigious fountain sprays celebrated the fabulous desert weather.

Owner of the L’Horizon Hotel in Palm Springs, Jack Wrather was a friend and pitched in to build the Disneyland Hotel adjacent to the park in the modern style ubiquitous in the desert.

Bogert’s recollection continued, “Walt came up with the idea that he wanted to build a large recreation park. He was fascinated with Thousand Palms and spent considerable time figuring what all he could put in its beautiful oasis. Finally, he concluded that such a park had to be in an area with greater population, so he looked for land in Anaheim. He had to raise seventeen million for the project. So he hocked everything, even selling his home in Smoke Tree. Finally, he got the American Broadcasting Company, the Santa Fe Railroad, the Bank of America and several other large corporations to kick in capital. His little park became the success story of the age.”

After the success of Disneyland in 1955, Disney bought a second lot and built a second home at Smoke Tree Ranch, such was his enchantment with the desert. The second house was designed by Carl Denny and built by Bill Foster.

Writing in 2006 when the Disney Company was a mere 83 years old, Bogert summarized the course of the company, “In 1965 (Disney) purchased 25,000 acres in Florida, and that became Disney World. He died in 1966 from an acute circulatory collapse after surgery for a lung tumor. You have to wonder what a cartoonist from Kansas City who invented Mickey Mouse would think if he could see the $53 billion company bearing his name that owns theme parks, hotels, cruise lines, films, baseball and hockey franchises, a software business, movie studio and major TV network.”

Today, the Disney Company at 100 years old is still inventing, especially here in the desert. Cotino, named for the genus Cotinus or smoke tree, continues the founder’s fascination with community living, lived in the desert by Disney himself and made tangible in EPCOT, the acronym coined by Walt Disney in 1966 for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, the housing development he envisioned next to Disney World in Florida. It’s next iteration is taking form in Rancho Mirage now.

Disney’s vision has proven extraordinarily tenacious and will doubtless persist in the desert as his company enters its second century.

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and friends are wearing new outfits exclusively for this glitzy celebration – and they invite you to do the same. The new outfits are inspired by the party’s vintage vibe, which celebrates the glitz and glam of Hollywood. Art directors, show producers and designers worked together to land on just the right combination of colors and fabric for these special looks. Delve into any old collection of ornaments from the ‘30s, ‘40s or ‘50s, and you’re sure to find an array of colorful pastels. And that’s exactly what we see here! Mint green and soft reds in sumptuous fabrics set the tone as you encounter Mickey & Friends Holiday Greetings in Animation Courtyard. The gang has just wrapped on the set of their new holiday film, and you’re invited to catch a glimpse of the magic!

Even More to Adore

Holiday decorations around Echo Lake

A DJ will play the merriest of mash-ups, featuring a mix of smooth classics layered with modern beats. While tunes at the entrance set the tone for the evening, stroll around Echo Lake for a trip down a more recent memory lane featuring holiday music and characters from classic Disney Channel favorites, including Powerline Max, Rescue Rangers Chip ‘n’ Dale and Phineas and Ferb.

Throughout the event, revel in oodles of spectacular entertainment. At Welcome to Disney Jollywood Nights, strike your best pose for “The Gram” in front of a stunning new neon sign before joining the dance party. Disney PhotoPass photographers will be there to capture the moment, and complimentary digital downloads of your Disney PhotoPass photos captured during the event are included with the price of your ticket.**

Beyond marvelous entertainment, there’s so much more that’s new and fun. Since the night is Hollywood – get ready to pose for special photo opportunities. A Robotic Arm Magic Shot will capture your red carpet moment with a glamorous, show-stopping video. There’s also a Camera Array Magic shot – seven cameras that will shoot a boomerang-style photo of your group in front of a Disney Jollywood Nights backdrop.

Plus, you can enjoy favorite attractions with lower wait times during this limited-capacity event, and a virtual queue will be in place for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.* Remember to link your event tickets in the My Disney Experience app to be eligible for this virtual-queue opportunity.

And don’t forget: Disney’s Hollywood Studios will once again present Sunset Seasons Greetings nightly throughout the season, as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is magically transformed into an array of holiday scenes as snow falls along Sunset Boulevard.

Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World ready for the holidays

Fractal Frenzy: NEW Frozen Holiday Surprise at Magic Kingdom Park

At Magic Kingdom Park, “Frozen” friends from Arendelle are conjuring up something new and extra-special for the holidays.

Join in the celebration of the new “Frozen Holiday Surprise” as Olaf and more than 100 of his Snowgie siblings decorate Cinderella Castle with festive touches. Appearing live on stage in new holiday looks, Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff each bring something special to the gathering. Festivities culminate as Elsa adds sparkling finishing touches, transforming Cinderella Castle into a shimmering crystallized palace – a look that will remain throughout the evening.

Bringing this spectacle to life is no small feat, as lighting designers, video technicians, composers and even a full orchestra worked together to create this new holiday magic.

Debuting Nov. 7, “Frozen Holiday Surprise” will occur nightly throughout the holiday season.

Also, families and kids of all ages can enjoy the most wonderful time of the year at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, a separately ticketed event offering warm-hearted fun at Magic Kingdom on select nights Nov. 9-Dec. 22.

Holiday Service cast members with holiday decorations

Making Magic: Walt Disney World Holiday Services

The magic makers at Holiday Services neither sleep nor slumber. Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but this team of designers, decorators and other professionals ready more than 600 trees and 1,700 wreaths and hang nearly nine miles of garland each year. Santa would be proud! How long does all this merry-making take? Almost a full year. As soon as one holiday season wraps up, the Holiday Services team begins preparing for the next year.

Whether they’re creating new items or making sure that existing decor remains merry and bright, our band of specialists ensures that the entire resort sparkles.

Gingerbread

Comfort & Joy: Gingerbread Galore at Disney Resort Hotels

If you’ve ever gazed in fascination at the larger-than-life gingerbread displays that appear each holiday season at Disney Resort Hotels, you’ve probably asked yourself how long it takes to create such wonders. Planning and preparation begin a full seven months ahead! The culinary team at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa starts mixing the fragrant dough for its life-size gingerbread house in May ahead of a two-month curing process. Individual shapes, from shingles to Mickey cookies, are baked and decorated throughout the summer and then stored for “construction” in November. The house itself takes three days to build.

This year, guests can once more enjoy these stunning works of art in six Disney Resort Hotels, including a new display at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. I can’t wait to see the incredible creations that our cast members have in store for us! Look for displays – no doubt, with a few new surprises – at these locations.

Delicious Doings: EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays

At EPCOT, cast members have been dreaming up the menu and testing new recipes for the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays presented by AdventHealth. Planning for this popular event starts a year in advance. The team focuses on creating dishes and drinks that celebrate the diversity of holiday traditions with comfort foods that inspire warm memories.

Ensuring that each guest has a delicious encounter every time is top of mind for the team, so thorough testing is imperative. And, once that’s complete, it’s on to production. During last year’s festival, the culinary team baked more than 250,000 cookies in just five weeks for the event’s Holiday Cookie Stroll.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Festival of the Holidays, which begins Nov. 24. This year will bring several “firsts” to the festival. The all-new fireworks-and-laser spectacular “Luminous: The Symphony of Us” will debut Dec. 5, 2023. And, with EPCOT being home to The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary celebration, guests will find beautiful holiday decor at the park entrance commemorating the Disney100 celebration.

More Merriment: Holidays Around Our World

At Disney Springs, guests can shop, dine and play amidst a wonderland of beautiful decor and an incredible array of dining options beginning Nov. 10. Be sure to save time to visit Santa Claus at Once Upon a Toy, and don’t miss the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll presented by AdventHealth. 19 Disney-themed trees will be on display throughout the shopping, dining and entertainment district. Plan at least one nighttime visit to experience snowfall in Town Center for more unforgettable memories.

Merry Managerie at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Cheerful decor and festive flotillas are some of the holiday highlights at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. In addition to meetings with favorite Disney characters and Santa himself, guests can interact with a Merry Menagerie of life-size, artisan-sculpted animal puppets daily on Discovery Island. The park’s iconic Tree of Life also awakens each evening with a colorful tableau of wintry tales accompanied by a musical score.

With so much to see and experience, there’s no end to the delight that holidays inspire at Walt Disney World Resort. Plan your visit today.

*Guests attending the event can request to join the queue beginning at 6:00 p.m. Each guest can request to enter this virtual queue no more than once per event. This is only available for guests on the day of the event they are attending, and their specific event tickets must be linked to their My Disney Experience account in order to join the virtual queue. Guests attending this special ticketed event do not need to be in Disney’s Hollywood Studios to request to join at the time the queue becomes available.

The rooms look quite nice. Yes, this is not a fully-immersive resort like those that WDI builds from scratch in the modern era, but I think it'll be a good improvement of the existing structure. Love the Inside Out fireplaces.

3. Land Details Found Around Zootopia

Your journey begins the moment you step foot (or hoof or paw) on Mane Street. This street is lined with a variety of storefronts perfect for any sized animal that might find themselves perusing the streets. You will then be led to the civic plaza, Savannah Central, exactly where Judy Hopps once found herself when embarking on her great Zootopia adventure! Savannah Central’s fun, colorful, and animated advertisements are played on the large Zootopitron screen, showcasing the energy and vitality of this modern city. Behind this is the stunning skyline of Zootopia, which was originally inspired by a variety of city skylines in the animated film. At Zootopia Central Station, a large metro train can be seen passing behind an upper-level decorative stained-glass window. The train comes and goes as it picks up and drops off animal commuters, just as it did in the film.

If you pay attention, you’ll even spot animal-inspired street modifications like “Cubs at Play” warning signs and vehicle height clearance signs to remind long-necked citizens, like giraffes, to be aware of their height when entering tunnels and underpasses, along with roads and streets that are accommodating of all animals of all sizes.

Collections will feature beloved characters like Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, Flash, Clawhauser, and more, with careful consideration of each character’s species, personality, appearance, and story.
