Disney? Marvel? Universal?

Question .. I've been trying to look it up on the net

What happens now with things like the spider-man ride and other things in universal studios that are marvel ..?? Does it mean Disney now owns them??

Well Disney owns the CHARACTERS, yes. But Universal has a standing contract with Marvel that Disney has to honour. But it also means royalties will go from Universal to Disney ( ironocally ) by way of Marvel.

From what I understand too is that Universal can keep using licensed characters as long as they make no changes to the attractions. If that time ever comes, then it must be renegotiated. It'll be interesting to see what Disney decides at THAT point. My guess however is that they will be happy to just take Universal's money and keep the contracts going. I think it would take a considerable investment from Universal to completely rebrand that area!

Since the deal is expected to take 6-12 months to close, I don't think Disney owns anything yet!

But, once the ink is on the contract, the pp is correct. Universal gets to keep their rides and attractions, but the royalties will go to Disney.

I read something today that implied that as part of the deal made when Disney decided to buy Marvel, Disney is not able to do anything with the Marvel character in Florida, but are able to in their other Disney parks. My guess is that this is due to Marvel's deal with Universal.

But I do have to enjoy the fact that Disney's biggest competitor in Florida will be paying Disney royalties for the right to use Marvel characters. So now, when people leave Disney World to go to Universal, Disney still makes money.

According to those on the Universal board, Universal has the theme parks rights east of the Mississippi. Hence, the characters/ rides at Universal Orlando but not in Universal in California. If you want specifics there was lots of discussion of this on the Universal board.

Also be aware that Disney is doing a lot more with Universal now that is unrelated to Marvel.

I read an article about a month (maybe 2) ago that says Disney is working with Universal developing attractions (design and mechanicals).
