Hi! I am new to this forum, I usually hang out at the planning forums. Anyway, I think I may try to do the 1/2 marathon in Jan. I usually walk 2.5 miles about 3-4 times a week with DH. We do it for a little excersize, not trying to do it fast. I am usually walking slower than I would at a "normal" pace for me (I tend to walk fast). I walk slower due to DH...he is slower than me. Anyway, today I decided to try to start training to walk/run the 1/2.
I know that I will have to be able to finish in 3.5 hours, so I timed myself today. I did 7 miles in 1 hour and 25 minutes. I don't think that is too bad for a start. What do you think? My DH says I have to prove to him that I can do it before we book the trip. Or even register. I can understand that, it is expensive, and I don't want to lose money if I won't be able to do it. So, how long do you think I can wait to register? When does the race registry usually close? I am hoping to be able to increase my speed by a month from now. Is that unrealistic? I have never been a runner, and I was planning on racewalking most of the marathon. Can it be done in the requred time if I only run part of the time? Any help is appreciated. I am really new at all of this! Thanks! ::MinnieMo

That time is awesome. I can run 6 miles in 1 hour 10 minutes...and I clocked a 2:14 half in November. I was on target for a sub-6 finish but came down with the flu...so I finished the full 35 seconds over the allowed time.

So tell your hubby you have proved yourself and ask him where he'd like to stay b/c you are registering PRONTO ;).

Right now--I would build on your stamina, and NOT concentrate on speed. Check us out on the training thread or the FAQ for more information. Some helpful links in both places.

Teh answer to most of your questions is a profound yes! I ran/walk the marathon---and training was on target--but the flu had other plans and unfortunately not much I could do about that.

There is no way to tell when registration will close--it will close when it is full. As soon as you know you want to go--register :).

FYI--from where you are now (or for anybody really)--the rule of thumb is to not increase your workouts by more than 10% per week--you can do it based on time or distance. Increasing too quickly--and focusing on speed especially--right now...can set you up for injury.

Check out the book "Marathoning for Mortals" by John Bingham.

Good book :).

Good luck and welcome to the team!

If you can already do 7 miles in less than 90 minutes, you'll have no problem finishing the 1/2. You're already well within your time limit. Keep training and enjoy the 1/2 marathon! It's one of the best things I've ever done. :sunny:

WHOA! :earseek: You're awesome! :sunny:

I think your DH has all the proof he needs - register soon! :cool1:

I can't even imagine being able to walk/run that fast, but one day I WILL do it! I have set a personal goal to be ready for the 1/2 in 2007. I REALLY want it!

You're doing better than a 15 minute mile already ... GO FOR IT !!! :Pinkbounc :cheer2: :Pinkbounc

I used Hal Higdon's training schedule for 2 Half Marathon's I did (including Disney), and it was a great training program.

Get registered ... you won't regret it! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. And be sure to join the training thread ... one of the most special aspects of Disney was meeting all of the great people that I on-line trained with for a year. :flower:

book the trip. That will be even more incentive to keep working at it.
btw-you have nothing to prove, you're already doing it!

So why don't I see you on the training thread yet? ;) Come join us!

I just walked 4.88 mls. in 53 mins. I'm just starting to train and want to know if that time is horrible, or what??? My girlfriend and I may do the 1/2 marathon, but it depends on our pace. Where is the marathon thread? Hope to see you all in Jan. Where does everyone stay? I was thinking of staying a one of the All Stars. :earboy2:

Excellent time---I would guess it is better than a 12 minute mile--but I'd have to do the math. A 12 minute mile--would be 5mph....so you are close and that is excellent.

Scanmom You are doing it! Register! You can do it for sure. Much of the fun is in the anticipation and you do not have to do a half in order to prove you can do one. You are so in this you will have absolutely no problem and will find that as you are training you will improve. You have plenty of time and are really already there. Don't push too quickly or you may become injured, but do train well.

There are some good suggestions of books to follow to aid in working through your preparation. I am using the John Bingham, Marathoning for Mortals. The Hal Higdon is also being used by others here. For sure follow some sort of program so you do not overtrain.

Come to the Marathon/half marathon thread and enjoy your journey with us. The fun is so in the approach and getting to know each other on the way is such a rewarding experience. I had the pleasure of doing the half with WISHers this past January and it was an incredible and memorable experience, one I wish everyone could enjoy!

Monte, you too, come on over and have fun with us on the weekly thread. You will have no problem in completing the half. Follow the suggestions in a tried and true program and you will be certain to succeed. Have some fun along the way and share with us as you go.

Should have known teh "dog catcher" would rope 'em in! ;) Thanks Lily!

Glad you two joined us!

scanmom-Who can resist a WAY COOL Donald Duck medal? It will be better than any other "old" medal you get. You are already doing it, like the others said, so sign up already! :sunny:

Does everyone use a pedometer to time your distance? I think mine is off by a mile. I just bought a good beginners book for walking/running a 5k, 10k, and half marathon. It's easy to read and is very helpful.

monte - This is a great question for the training thread. You may want to post there. Here's my take, though. If you are able to keep a consistent stride, the ped should be ok. It basically just count the number of strides you take. Many of us have Garmins (GPS). My excuse is that we run and walk. So, a pedometer would not work with a varying stride. OK. MAybe i just wanted a new toy. ;)
