Disney Magic - Nov 10, 2012 - Western Caribbean from Galveston - Sun, Fun & Beaches!

My dad will celebrate his 72nd birthday on the cruise, Nov 14, Costa Maya day. I am looking for suggestions of how we can celebrate. I was thinking of the Tropicante restaurant / beach I've read about here. But also looking for other ideas. My dad uses a scooter or walker to get around, so he needs something accessible. I know we can grab a cab to Tropicante and from the pictures I've seen on Trip Advisor it looks like he could have a shady beachside seat right inside the restaurant.

Any other ideas? I've never been to these ports, so I have no idea what to expect.

My birthday is on November 14th, too. We are doing a Disney excursion to the Mayan ruins that day. This has been on my bucket list forever and getting to finally do it on my birthday is a real treat. I also made a dinner reservation at Palo for that evening.

Wow! So that's 3 Nov 14 birthdays that I'm aware of now on this cruise! Group hug/drink!:grouphug:

I was just going to comment on what a popular day November 14th is.

On our first DCL cruise, all of us DIS"rs got together in Lumieres on the Sunday AM for a group breakfast for an informal meet n greet. We could do something like that and make it into a bit of a birthday recognition party too!

The following year, we took a Carnival cruise :( and I arranged one of the bars for our Cruise Critic group to meet up. There was no extra charge except any bar tabs our group had incurred.

Those are 2 options for a meeting together.

Our Dis group also arranged for lanyards as identifiers for those who were involved with the thread, but though most paid the purchasers back, not everyone did. Not everyone wore their lanyards too so it was just as hard to find our DIS buddies.

Anyone interested in a Meet and Greet?

I am definitely up for a meet and greet. On most of the cruises I have been on we had a quick 3:00 PM meet at the Promenade Lounge on Embarkation day so that we could put faces to names.

On a couple of cruises I did lanyards with the cruise dates as FE gifts, but I joined this cruise too late to pull it off.

PS: We got our room assignment today. We are in 2050.

Hello all! My DH and I are first time cruisers! We love Disney and frequent Disneyland. My DH is Steve and he is 43 and my name is Karyn and I am 40. We have 4 boys and are checking this out to see if cruising will be our new vacation destination! Wish we could take them all this time but they are young! I have been reading about the FE and we would like to join that as well. We are not assigned a room yet but know that it will be an oceanview. I am so appreciative of all the advice. It is truly a whole new world to cruise!

Welcome to Steve and Karyn! Ahhh, a special getaway with Mickey sans kids! Hope you have a great time with us!

The Roll Call at the top of page 5 has been modified.

We're up for some sort of meet n greet, too. Just let us know when and where.

We're likely to be easy to recognize - we'll generally be the family chasing after the toddler in the leashed pink backpack. She's tiny, she's fast, she's fearless, she's strong, and she's a skilled climber.

I am back to GTY status after having a room assigned earlier this week, but there is a good reason for this. I rang DCL today to arrange for the cruise documents to be sent to my work address and decided to be bold. I had spotted that Interline rates for veranda cabins had opened up again and I checked if they would still let me upgrade. They did and now we are in a 5B. I am so excited. I have not told DH and do not intend to do so until it is time to go to our cabin on November 10th. This will be such a lovely surprise for him.

Really excited here! 7 weeks from right now we'll be at Hobby getting our luggage!:cool1:
I've already created my 'out of office' notification to be posted on auto-reply for emails.
Geez! We still have lots of hockey, basketball, school, work, Halloween and our Canadian Thanksgiving to go through before we even think about departing, but DS5 is already packed to go!

We still will be in the air this time in 7 weeks. We have never flown United before so that is an adventure in its own right.

How exciting! (both the surprise and the upgrade)

For the first time, my husband and I are going to completely surprise our daughters. We've never done anything like this before. We are going to pick them up from school on Friday and just head to the airport. They are going to FREAK OUT!!!! Not only about the cruise, but the fact that grandma is meeting us in Houston and coming along. *IF* i can get my act together, and get everyone packed without them figuring out.

I have to say it's a little bit upsetting that I have no one at home to share my excitement with. My husband leaves all the planning to me. He loves the trips we go on, but he doesn't want to know the details, he just wants to show up :rotfl: Meanwhile, I'm all about the details and the excitement of figuring everything out, and the girls usually share that excitement with me. Still, this surprise will be worth it!

I just booked an excursion on Grand Cayman today with Stingray Sailing -- going on a catamaran to Stingray City and then snorkeling on the reef.
(Leaving mom behind on the ship)

I love hearing about all these surprises for the ones you love! I absolutely cannot do it. My son HATES surprises, detests them with a passion, and we generally give him as much notice as possible about things. I enjoy hearing about other people being able to give their spouses or kids that thrill of some exciting discovery.

I'm the trip planner in our family, too. My husband is happy to leave it to me, although if I ask him to pick between a pair of excursions or activities, he'll offer an opinion if he has one. I generally just tell him what sort of trip we're taking, who (if anyone) we're going with, and when we're going, and he puts in for vacation and leaves the details to me.

Yeah, actually we *have* had one surprise go bad -- when my older daughter was about three, we told her we were driving down to FL. We didn't tell her exactly where we were going (WDW) until we were around St Augustine. Then I showed her a brochure and told her we were going to see Mickey. Well, when we had said we were going to Florida, she had taken it into her head that we were going to see my mom, who lives in north FL. When she found out she was going to WDW, not grandma's house, she cried HYSTERICALLY. For the rest of the day, even when we got to POFQ. My husband ended up having to call in to his unit to ask for more leave so we could stop by and see my mom on the way back. My daughter ended up having a great time, but we always kid her a little about it.

I am fairly confident that since seven years have passed since then, and since I know she loves cruising, she'll be ecstatically happy with this surprise. Especially since this time, we're bringing grandma with us!

I hear you on this one. I am our in-house planning department, too. He tells we to just let him know where and when to show up. He also has openly admitted that he would not go on a cruise if he had not got me to organize it all as it is all too complicated for him. The irony is the one thing that he does do is sort out the airfare and I work for an airline. :confused3

I know for the second cruise we did, we had a family from Florida with two sons and they had no idea they were going. It was the birthday treat for one of them and they had been told they were going to Seaworld. A lot of the people on our cruise meet thread stayed at the same hotel the night before the cruise and we all arranged to have breakfast at the same time as the boys were going to be told at breakfast. Well, I think it did not sink in until much later, because they did not react at all. They had a wonderful time on the cruise though.

Hi everyone! :wave2: I haven't gotten a chance to read through all the pages yet, but I promise I will. I just wanted to introduce myself and my family. This is our first Disney Cruise (actually our first cruise ever!).. My name is Jayme and my husband is John. We have a 4 year old named Joshua. We are very excited about the cruise and especially pirate night. My parents are also cruising with us as well, because we will be celebrating my birthday (Nov. 11) aboard the ship.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend and I will be stopping back by really soon.

Greetings Jayme and John! Welcome aboard to the Disney Magic cruise! I know you'll have a fantastic time with your family. I've updated the roll call at the top of page 5. 7 weeks from right now, we'll be possibly on deck, enjoying a 'beverage' with our main squeeze while the kiddies have fun in their clubs. (Either that, or staying in our staterooms while we force one or more into bed!) The following morning, we'll be enjoying our first breakfast at sea.

Welcome aboard, Jayme. I, too, will be celebrating my birthday on this cruise (Nov 14), which is also my first cruise. Isn't this a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday?

Wow, there are so many of us who celebrate a birthday on November 14th. I have kind of lost count, but I think there are at least 4 of us. I have never had a cruise meet thread with so many birthdays and I have been part of some huge groups.
