for those of you that have both, is there much of a difference between the two or is it virtually the same with a different theme?
Thanks

They're a lot alike. The game play itself isn't much different - story based missions/battles, etc. The biggest difference for me was that Dimensions requires you to move the pieces around the game pad, frequently. If you're comfy on the couch playing, it's a pain to get up and move them - they REALLY should have made it wireless. With Infinity, you only have to move them if you want to change characters. I played through the Avengers set in Infinity and lost interest. I'm not into the toybox thing, but that is an advantage of Infinity - you can build your own worlds/levels and you're not limited by the story. I would say that Infinity is probably more kid friendly than Dimensions.

As an adult, I enjoyed Dimensions MUCH more than Infinity. It has all the humor that all the other Lego games have, and I get to play as all 13 Doctors :) Plus you get to assemble everything.

My Ex and Son (7) both prefer Disney Infinity to Lego Dimensions.

One of the complaints that they both have about Lego is that there's not as much "building" as there is in Infinity (which I think they only say that because you'd think there'd be a lot of stuff you could change and personalize in a Lego game). It seems to be straight forward game play (though obviously you build/rebuild the small lego sets).

That said, we didn't really get into Infinity until the last one - with all the Star Wars Sets. The Marvel stuff from version 2.0 is OK. I'm not sure why we kept buying after 1.0 honestly - it's kind of bad.

My son spends a lot of time just playing around in the toybox area of Disney Infinity. He builds worlds and then plays around in them. There are also pre build toybox worlds that you can download (we don't do that) and I think buy too (we don't do that either). Again, I think the toybox has improved greatly since the first version.

I've been debating this myself. I decided to just stay with the Disney infinity for now after reading many, many reviews about each game and I think the infinity fits my girls better.

Here's a question for those of you who peek at this thread: We currently have Disney infinity that I bought last year, Edition 2. Being that I don't know anything about this game, I bought some cute figures for this year's Christmas but guess what -- they say Edition 3 on them which I now understand isn't compatible with our current 2!! Can my kids just download some sort of upgrade right on the wii-u machine? Or do I need to go buy an Edition 3 game?

To the above poster, you need an Edition 3 starter kit with the Edition 3 base and game to use the Edition 3 figures.

The only way they are alike is that they both involve investing tons of money in figures and you import characters into the game using the figures on a portal.

Lego Dimensions plays very much like all the other Lego games except instead earning characters through play, you get many of them by purchasing the figures and importing them into the game. There are many different worlds to explore using different character packs.

Disney Infinity has sections where you play games, but I don't think they are as good as the Lego games. Then it has the toybox area, where you explore and build worlds which as an adult, does not appeal to me at all, but my 8 year old grandson likes it.

I prefer Lego Dimensions by far.

You should be able to download Infinity 3.0 straight to the device. As long as you have a 2.0 game pad it will work fine. You just will only have the toy box and not the playsets they come with the starter kit.

We were able to do this. Our daughters want the inside out characters for Christmas so we wanted to make sure it works

Thanks for all they replies. We have Infinity and my girls LOVE it. I asked because I was able to get the Lego base set for a really good price ($35)and I'm debating whether or not to keep it

My kids have the Infinity sets and asked for the Lego set for Christmas; which we bought. The reviews make it sound like the Lego game play is similar to that of the Lego games but not necessarily the same as Infinity. Also there is quite a difference in the characters available for each system - my kids were excited about the Simpsons, Wizard of Oz and Back to the Future characters.

Personally for price you mentioned, I think it's worth the money.

Thats what I'm unsure of. Can they play it with just the starter pack I purchased or does it require you to buy all the extra packs, etc, thus making it a bigger investment?

You can play through the entire game with the starter pack - I did. The extra packs are just extra levels/worlds and playable characters/vehicles. There are some things that can only be done with certain characters, but nothing essential to the game itself.

For $35 I would keep it. Heck, I bought at $75 and it was well worth it.
