I am considering buying a few Disney gift cards ahead of our trip. Can they be used at all shops and restaurants? I am assuming the popcorn/ice cream carts may not accept them.

You should be good at any art that accepts credit cards. You won't be able to use them at ghirardelli, some DTD restaurants, and that kind if thing. I can't remember if Starbucks in DCA takes them. Most places you'll be fine, but be sure to have another method of payment ready for the few places that don't accept them.

They can be used anywhere in the parks but Ghiradelli. DDD is a whole different animal. These are not necessarily Disney affiliated stores/restaurants. Disney gift cards wont be accepted most places.

I love getting the gift cards to use at the carts and places that don't take CC. That way I can use my CC to get my miles :)

DD tried to use a gift card in the shop that sells the glass and crystal figurines and she was unable to do so.

I remember not being able to use the Giftcard to buy the kids balloons from a vendor on Main Street. Also there was a beer stand in CA where we were not able to use the card.

You can use a Ghiradelli gift card at the Ghiradelli store though, right? I believe I read that on a couple of threads when they first opened in California Adventure. You can get (4) $25 gift cards at Costco.com for $79.99. I don't know if you can get them at Costco themselves. When I go into the store, I have a list and stick to it!

When my mom and I tried to buy light up minnie ears from a cart, he said cash only. So I would say 99% will take them. And yes, I have bought many churros with my gift card. :rotfl:

This is correct, those 2 crystal stores are not owned by Disney, they are just contracted to be there.

As for the carts that sell the ears, that is bc they do not process any cards, just like an ice cream stand, etc.

Thanks for the great info! :) I am planning to use Disney gift cards during our November 2013 trip.
