Good Morning Everyone!

Just curious if anyone had details about how Travelex, the travel insurance offering within the DVC member site, is dealing with COVID 19 related cancellations?

In the event Disney elects to close the parks again (or simply not open them) due to increased COVID numbers in Orlando..

Does anyone know if we will get reimbursed for Flights, offsite hotel reservations (before or after the DVC stay), and other non-reimbursable expenses? I'm not concerned with the DVC points themselves, Disney has been fair with how they are working with us so far.

I've tried calling the number provided but it's quite busy and can't get through so far.

Travelex has folded. We asked this question - while not listed in their contract? This is an excerpt of their answer (full letter on request):

"Please note that Trip Cancellation claims for fear of exposure to Coronavirus/COVID-19, travel restrictions due to the virus, and flight or tour cancellations due the virus are not listed as covered events under a standard trip cancellation policy."

You have two choices: 1) SUE (lengthy), and 2) Never do business with Travelex in the future, as they do not perform.

We have chosen 2). Walking away, never touching a non-performing "Insurance" agency again.

Now - if someone wants to do a Class-Action re: Travelex? We are in. In the mean time, it appears that this was a fake Insurance agency, does not pay, of no value to anyone.

Dean - thank you for your response.. you have certainly ensured that I won't be paying $100 to "protect" my investment.

It seems that alot of insurance companies, like in a hurricane, find loopholes in their language or contract.

It is extremely rare that an insurance policy would cover a pandemic, and if it does, it is likely the policy would cost almost as much as the travel itself. Just as most home and business insurance won't cover any damages from civil unrest, police action, military action, act of war, or an "act of God." Also, insurance companies have really never covered cancellations for "fear of what may happen" because that would basically give the policyholder the right to cancel for any fear they may have, and what they fear may never happen.

It is also why I don't buy travel insurance. I don't know of a company that still carries old fashioned "flight" insurance, like what you used to buy from airport vending machines. basically a death/dismemberment policy for flight accidents.

Given all of this - I expect more from DVC/Disney and they should stop partnering with an agency that won't cover the events we are literally living through right now.

Travel insurance policies are pretty standard. DVC's choice is simple, offer a travel insurance that is convenient to purchase for the members that want it, or don't offer any travel insurance and let members be on their own to purchase it privately. Either way, it is extremely doubtful you'd find a policy that would cover a pandemic situation.

The choice is yours to purchase it or not. As I said, I don't purchase travel insurance...well, except for cruises, in case of medical evacuation, especially at sea or a foreign port.

If you look at what is actually covered in the Travelex policy as detailed on the DVC member site (which you can go and download now), it only covers certain things

As said, pandemics are not covered - even Cancel For Any Reason contracts now have that exclusion.
As an insurer, however, we found TravelEx to be excellent. When I became extremely ill in Rome (wasn't allowed to fly) they paid every penny plus (they gave a better exchange rate) without any hassle whatsoever.

I personally wouldn't use travel insurance for domestic travel as possible payout & risk are so much lower.

Worth mentioning.... we tend to fly with DELTA, on all trips....
DELTA offers AIRLINE Insurance - not trip Insurance. But our experience has been that the major problem, in any trip, is not WDW..... it's the FLIGHTS. Delay's, cancellations, bags....

Hence, we are shifting to this.
