I went to the Disney store today to start getting Disney dollars collected for our yearly trip to the world when I was told that they were discontinued and in place of them is the Disney gift card. I was told that they can still be used in Disneyworld but at stores only. So does anyone know any specifics?? My husband thinks we will still be able to use them at the kiosks, but just not for food.

They just released new ones from DL .

I'm also sorry but the Disney Store CM's are really no longer in the loop the a person selling Disney stuff at Sears now the CP has taken them over. They are really just another Vendor now.

I'm not saying this isn't true and the cards are easier to track and use but the Dollars are very nice collectables.

Bought some last week @ local Disney store (along w/the $2.50 t-shirts & $.50 pewter key chain).

CM said they're still selling them & just got in a new batch.

DVC told me that they can be used anywhere (participating) on-site - shops, restaurants, even for park tickets @ gate. The only exception is DVC won't accept for dining plan payment. Not sure if the resorts have the same restriction.

IMO, don't think they'll ever discontinue them. Can you imagine how many are sitting in peoples drawers uncashed as "souveniers"? What a gold-mine for Disney.

When we were there a few weeks ago somebody tried using a gift card in the restaurant in France. They wouldn't take it. Good thing he had another form of payment with him. I think those gift cards can be very misleading.
I know that if someone gave one to me I would assume I could use it anywhere in Disney.

Thanks for the input everyone. I will call around to the other disney stores and see if they have them. My kids get them every year to take to Disney to buy souveniers, so they would really only be using them in the stores and at the kiosks since we are on the dining plan and wouldnt need to use them for food. ;)

Was it the NEW disney gift card? Maybe they had the old kind and just assumed it could be used at Disney.

It was the new gift card. I called 2 other stores last night and they still have them. They also told me they would continue to have them. So I dont know why one store would stop selling them when the others still will.

Oh well, I will just have to travel a little more to get disney dollars. It's worth it!!! :thumbsup2

The Disney Store used to have Disney Store only gift cards and Disney Dollars. This is when they were both owned and not owned by Disney.

Recently, WDW introduced it's own gift card, available for purchase down in WDW.

Disney Store followed suit (and possibly even listened to its customers) and came out with it's own gift card that can be used in the store AND at WDW. It's red and has Mickey on it, and his ear sticks out making it not a perfect rectangle.

Disney Dollars ARE still available for those who want them instead of this new card. From what I understand, the card (both the WDW issued and the DS issued) can be used anywhere Disney Dollars are used.

Disney Dollars tend to run out frequently. One time, we were out for months, and it was just as February break and the 50th was starting. That was not a fun time to be at work. We also ran out of park tickets at the time.

Some Disney Stores in the chain are certainly not with it, and they do have employees giving out incorrect information. A store in Colorado was not accepting the Disney Visa Rewards card in the same week my store was. If you ever get an answer in the Disney Store that you don't find to be adding up, ask to speak to a manager or a District Manager. DMs are available on the weekends, too.

Hope this helps! :)

I was at the Disney Store last weekend and asked about the Disney Dollars. They are still selling them but they are really pushing the card now. I personally would rather have the dollars.

My DD already has $150 saved and we still have 2 years to go. I'm giving her enough disney dollars so she'll have $10-$20 a day. The rest of her money will go on the WDW gift card. If she wants anything over the daily allowance, she can use her extra funds on the card. I feel much safer this way.

Wow, this thread is all over the page! :teeth:

The OP was asking about Disney Dollars, and to my knowledge, they are not being discountinued. It could be that the store you went to was just out of them. People use them for payment here still - I had some given to me on Sunday.

As far as the gift cards go, on May 1st a NEW Disney Gift Card was released that you can purchase in amounts ranging from $5 to $1,500 and reload the card at any time. The Disney Gift Card is flexible and easy to redeem at select Disney-owned and licensed locations.

Card users can shop, dine, stay and play at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, purchase merchandise at Disney Store locations in the U.S. and at DisneyShopping.com, vacation on Disney Cruise Line and much more.

The Disney Gift Card can be purchased from:

Walt Disney World Resort
Disneyland Resort
U.S. Disney Stores
DisneyShopping.com

I cut and pasted most of that from the cast portal, so you know the info is correct. This is a company wide card that will also be available at licensed locations, such as the Disney Store. It has a hologram on the front of it.

phorsenuf, more than likely, the person you are referring to had an older card. I can't tell you how many times I have had people try to use GCs marked Disney Store in WDW. That still won't work.

Believe that the restaurants @ DTD & Epcot that will not take the DP also won't accept the card.

Know that most of the Epcot venues have come around w/exception of few CS/carts. Which restaurant did this occur @?

My Disney store has both the card and the Dollars - I added to my card balance today and bought a $5 for DS. I can't decide which I like better. DS will have all Dollars for the August trip, and I have both Dollars and the gift card that DH and I will use. If we have Dollars left over we'll just bring them home and start adding to them for the next trip. I can't really see an advantage to one over the other, except the card is less bulky than many months' accumulation of Dollars!

The WDW resorts are supposed to have the capability to accept the cards shortly, so if I encounter a restaurant or whatever that WON'T take the card I will just charge the purchase back to the room, then pay the resort with the gift card.

I just bought $50 worth yesterday. I did see that new card, but it does not seem as fun as the dollars.

The main difference I see between the cards and the dollars is that the card is like any gift card. It will keep the remaining balance until you hit $0 (although I believe you can add back on to it). The Disney dollars can be used at the parks and the change will be given back in cash (if you prefer not to bring any Disney dollars back). So if you buy a $3 coke with a $10 disney dollar, they will give you the $7 in regular money.

It's all really what the individual prefers. The card is easier to carry but the kids would probably prefer the Disney dollars. It's nice to be able to have the choice.

In October we will be in WDW along with my 15 yr. old. There will be a day that she will be spending most of her time at Disney Quest. Does anyone know if DQ takes the disney gift card, disney dollars, or if it's best to just have cash to pay for any food and drinks? Does anyone know if and where you can buy the disney gift card once you're on the property? I hate to be unprepared.

Fortunately my store is one that is with it! We all know that we take Disney Rewards cards (and that they can be reloaded until the exp. date) and that you can use the Disney Dollars and the Gift Cards at both the stores and the parks. It's a shame that some stores are so out of it that it gives all of the stores overall a bad name. If you ever visit the Disney Store in Whitehall, PA, you will find CM who know what they are talking about!

So, disney dollars are still available for sale, but not every Disney store has them?

Now, I have a Disney store gift card someone gave me about a month or two ago- it's red with Mickey on it, but it is a perfect rectangle. Is this one good in WDW, or just stores? It doesn't mention anything about WDW on the card either way.

Anyone know?

Just got a job at TDS and asked they are not discontinueing (sp) them. But with them not being owned by Disney guess you never know. But it seems silly they would?
