I will be buying my daughter (age 4) a Princess dress before our Disney vacation in October. Is it best to order through the Disney Store or are they the same dresses found at other store such as Toys R Us?

I bought my girls cinderella dresses that were halloween costumes. Based on your trip dates, the costumes should be out in September.

I paid $15 for each dress at the local grocery store. They were great quality and the girls loved them. They are also way cheeper than the Disney store and Toys R Us and are made of the same material.

The park dresses are really nice but scratchy. They are better quality than the Halloween costumes.

Check out Wal-Mart, my sister picked up a really nice (not scratchy) tink one for my niece a while back. It was $20-$25.

Scratchly is how my youngest daughter describes Disney dresses ... squirrel has it covered ... Walmart or a similar store.

I've seen them in Walmart and Toys R Us for a fraction of the price in the parks or Disneystore. You could also go on eBay and look there (I've never looked so I'm not 100% certain).

It all depends on what you WANT.

The Park dress is beautiful!! With a lot of detail and very well made. It also is much better material and will last longer. $65 for a park dress (can be found on ebay for less, check out the Bibbity Bobboty Boo thread by onetreehill for pics and info).

I rank the Dinsey store dresses as #2. There are detailed, but have a lower grade of fabric. These are NOT the same as the ones you buy in the parks.

The Walmart/TRU dresses are #3 - they are poor quality and ill fitting. You get what you pay for in this instance. There is nothing wrong with them, but they are not going to be the same quality as the ones you buy in the parks.

Personally, I am happy with out investment of 1 park dress and a couple of walmart dresses. I am really glad I did that 1 park dress though! DD loves it and it is bar far the most beautiful of them all. She has worn it for costume days at school, haloween, parties, etc. Any chance where she can be a princess :)

I have been making princess costumes for my friends' kids for a while now. They are tutu on the bottom. I just made a 2T Tinkerbell, and I'll post a picture in a couple days. They are super cute. They don't cost me much to make (not very much material, etc.), but they are very time intensive so I charge $20-25 each. I need to get some pictures...

What princess or princesses are you thinking of. I have made mostly Belle and Tink. I really want to do a Snow White one next.
The shipping cost might make it out of the price range you want to spend...

Thanks for all the information and the offer of making a dress (I wish I was that creative and talented). After discussing with DH, I think we will purchase a dress down there. This is a big trip for us, and given that DD is in her dress up phase right now I think we would get our moneys worth out of the dress. I will purchase her sparkly shoes up here though so she is comfortable in case she does not want to change after her breakfast. Thanks again!!

I know you've made your decision, but for anyone else ... you can often find princess dresses in Winners (especially since they'll start to stock them for Halloween, but they have them year-round). You can also purchase them from the Sears catalogue - when the "Wish" book comes out in August. Also, you can look at the Halloween costume section at Party Packagers if you have one locally.

Like a previous poster, I sewed my own dresses for my DDs when they were younger. You can find official Disney patterns. They didn't bring them to WDW though ... too hard to run around the thrill rides! ;)

Thought I would also mention that I've found sparkle shoes in the girls' department at Wal-mart - usually when the Fall stock comes in. They had red sparkle shoes (like Dorothy) and similar silver ones. Not officially princess, but they were real shoes instead of play dress-up ones at a fraction of the cost. :thumbsup2
