Disney: 25,000 unionized hourly workers will get raises this week

With so much bashing and negative news about Disney lately, it seems that good news never makes it in the headlines. Well, how about raises in this economy?

With so many people losing jobs, it seems that even holding onto a job is precious. However, 25,000 hourly cast members at Disney are getting raises this week.

Not to detract, but...

The raises, which will range from 4 percent to 5 percent for most workers, are part of a three-year contract that the resort and Service Trades Council Union negotiated in April 2007.

They have to do this. It's part of a contract they signed with the union before the economy tanked around December 2007.

Had they known then what they know now, i doubt they would have agreed to these union raises. It's nice to see, sure, but they're not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts (and certainly not out of the depths of their wallets).

i wonder if non-unionized workers are getting laid off/otherwise stiffed because of this?
